HARRY T. PORTER, oE PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters atent No. 549,015, dated October 29, 1895.
Application led June 14, 189B. serial No. 552,805. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.- l
Be it known that I, HARRY' T. PORTER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and countyV of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cans, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to the closure of cans 5 and it consists of a novel'construct-ion or formation ofthe joint between the cover of a can and the body thereof, whereby a triple seam is produced, the same being tight and reliable, all as will be hereinafter set forth and claimed. f
Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of a cover for a can embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view of a can-body to which said cover is applicable. Fig. 3 represents a vertical sectional -view showing the cover and can in juxtaposition. Fig. 4 representsacan in the process of manufacture. Fig. 6 represents, on an enlarged scale, a completed joint similar to that shown in Fig. 5. g
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the cover of a can ready to be applied .to the body thereof, the same having a central depressed portion B, an upwardly-extending portion or shoulder C, a laterally-extending ange D, and a depending flange E.
F designates a can-body, which is provided with the sides G and the laterally-extending flange H.
In the first stepof forming the joint between the body and the cover the latter is placed on the ange H in the manner seen in Fig. 3, the shoulder O abutting against the side G and the depending iange E surrounding the edge of the flange H. Said depending iiange E is nowcaused, by means of suitable mechanism, in the next step of manufac- Fig. 5 represents a completed can.
ture to be pressed, so as to surround and inclose the flange H, as seen in Fig. 4, said flange E now having the inwardly-turned portion or liange J, which is in contact with the under side of said iiange H, while the flange K depends from Vsaid portion J and is fincontact with the side G of the can-body F, as seen in Fig. 4.
In the next step the outer portion of the iange D, near its periphery, is bent downwardly, so as to form the depending flange L, while the fiange H is bent so as to form a depending liange M, the portions J and K (shown in Fig. 4) being now bent or folded by suitable mechanism so as to bring the iiange J in contact with the flange K, which is against the side G, the lower ends ot' said ianges L, J, and K being substantially on the same plane, van exceedingly strong, reliable, and hermetical joint being thus formed, as will be apparent from Figs. 5 and 6, the liability of any leakage between the cover and can-body being thus reduced to a minimum, owing to the triple seam formed by the Iianges M, P, and Q.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isA A VA can body, having the side Gr with a rim H, in combination with a can cover, having a shoulder C in contact with the inner side of said body, the continuous iianges D and E, said iianges D and E embracing said flange H, said tlangeE being bent and doubled, forming the flanges J and K, the latter being in contact with said side G, and the lianges D, H, andJ being doubled or bentupon the tiange K, the lower ends of -said doubled anges being on the same plane with the lower end of the said flange K, substantially as described.
j HARRY T. PORTER.
