Be it known that I, J CHN L. BLACK, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Electromagnetic Brakes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication.
to My present invention relates to an electromagnetic brake, wherein there is employed a magnet having an unobstructed central opening, and within which are located cores that are connected to the brake mechanism and which are adapted to come together Within the magnet; and my invention consists in forming the cores in sections, movably secured together, so as to close up when the brakes are applied, thus adding to the power 2o of the brake by providing a decreased movement to the core-sections as compared with the movement of the brakerods.

In operation, the current being turned on, 5 5 the sections of the cores will be drawn inwardly and will be caused to close up, as shown in Fig. V. By providing the sectional cores, it Will be seen that the inner sections will be near the center of the magnet before 6e the current is turned on and that the other sections are all a short distance therefrom, so that While the sections have individually but a short distance to travel their closing up causes a considerable movement of the rods 3.
I claim as my invention- In an electroniagnetic brake, the combination of a magnet having an unobstructed cen tral opening, cores formed in sections movably secured together, and connections be- 7o tween the outer sections of the cores and the brake mechanism, substantially as set forth.
