Description

Fay. Z
N.PETE.RS. IHOTOALITMOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.3
J. R. BATEY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specilicationforming part of Letters Patent No. 54,841, dated May 22, 1866.
To all whom t mail concern:
Be it known that I, J. R. BATEY, ot' the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hand-Protector for Flat- Irons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation ot' this invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates toa wrapper of leather or other suitable Inaterial, vhich can be conveniently clapped on the handle of a sad-iron, and which is provided with a guard in such a manner that by said wrapper the hand which operates the Hat-iron is prevented from coniing in direct contact with the heated handle, and at the saine time the guard forms a protection for the hand against the heat radiating t'roln the body of the flat-iron.
A represents a wrapper, made ofleather or other tlexible material which is a bad conductor ot' heat. The ends of' this wrapper are strengthened by semicircular lian ges a, of sheet metal or other suitable material, and from said ends extend two arms, b, to which the ends of said" arms passed through suitable slots in the guard B is attached, the .being guard, so that the guard can be conveniently adjusted higher or lower to suit the size of the Iron.
The wrapper A is of such a length that it extends once or oftener round the handle ot' a flat-iron, as shown in Fig. 2, and the opera tor can conveniently handle the dat-iron Without danger of burning his or her hand by coming in contact with the heated handle; and, furthermore, the heat radiating from the body ot' the iron is prevented from coming in direct Contact with theV hand, so that the 0perator is enabled to use the flat-iron with ease and convenience.
My protector takes the place of the rag which is generally used as a wrapper for the` handle of atirons. It forms a better protection 'against the heated handle than a rag', and by the addition ofthe guard it has the great advantage that it protects the hand against the heat radiating from the body of the iron, which, when the iron is very hot, renders it impossi-4 ble to operate the same except for short intervals with a simple rag.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A hand-protector for flat-irons, composed of a wrapper, A, and guard B, substantially as described', as a new article of manufacture. J. R. BATEY. Witnesses:
