To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUSTAV A. BRAGHHAU- SEN, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Hoboken, Hudson county, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring- Motors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to spring motors, and

sary when the mainspring was broken to send the entire box or the movement thereof to the factory in order to have a new spring put in, it being often necessary in such constructions to dismount the various parts of the entire structure in order to accomplish this end. This entailed long delays and great expense in replacing the spring and shipping parts of the motor, which by my invention is rendered unnecessary. v
In the drawings forming part hereof, Figure 1 is an end view of a spring-motor constructed in acccordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view with parts broken away of a portion of my improved motor, which is hereinafter described.
The drum A for the mainspring a is provided with or rigidly connected to a gearwheel b, which meshes with a pinion c, rigidly connected with a gear at, which gear at operates a suitable governor e through a pinion f, gear g, andworm h. A spindle p is supported by the framing O and is projected through and forms the pivot for the internally-toothed gear B, the two-part clutch, and the spring-drum, all of which are held in place thereon by a suitable retaining-sleeve q, having a set-screw r. The noiseless pawl X, which is suitably pivoted to the framing O, is controlled by a friction-plate s, the annular ring 15 of which is adapted to fit in the annular recess u of the hub of the internallytoothed gear B and be held in place therein by a superposed plate 2), the projections w on the annular ring of this friction-plate tending to hold the same in frictional contact with the hub of the gear B and rotate the plate therewith. The outer end of the friction-plate s is provided with a slot in which a pin on the pawl X enters. By this arrangement it will be observed that a rotation of the gear-wheel B in the direction of the arrow will cause the friction-plate s to be rotated therewith by its frictional contact and to lift the pawl X out of engagement with the teeth thereof. However, the slightest movement of the gear-wheel B in the opposite direction will cause the pawl X to be forced into engagement with the teeth of the gear by the friction-plate.
Having described the construction of my improved motor, I will now proceed to describe the operation thereof. Asuitable key or crank is attached to the key-post o and operated to turn the pinion n in the direction of the arrow, which pinion will cause the gear B to berotated, thus carrying the pawl out of engagement with the teeth. thereof. The other section m of case the mainspriug should become damaged or broken, it is merely necessary to remove the retaining-sleeve q, when the drum, with clutch-section Z, attached to the spring a therein, can be removed, and the damaged spring replaced by a new one. The drum can then be replaced upon the spindle, the retaining-sleeve secured in place, and the motor is again in condition for use.
While I have described with some particularity the various parts of the construction as illustrated in the drawings, I would have it understood that such construction illus trates but one form of my invention and that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention. For instance, instead of using one spring-drum, 8220., a number of such drums and their connecting mechanism mightbe employed upon the same spindle where great power is desired.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a motor, the combination of a spring drum, a spring and spindle for said drum, a two-part clutch both members of which are loosely mounted on said spindle, one member of said clutch being connected directly to one end of the spring and the other member of said clutch being connected with means for winding it, substantially as described.
2. In a motor, the combination of a revolving spring drum, a spring and spindle for said drum, a two-part clutch both members of which are loosely mounted on said spindle,
one member of said clutch being formed integral with a suitable gear and the other member being connected directly to the spring, and means for operating said gear, substantially as described.
3. In a motor, the combination of a spring drum, a gear-wheel thereon, a driving wheel operated thereby, a governor, a train of gear connecting with the governor, said train be ing also operated by the gear on said spring drum, a gear-wheel B, having clutch section formed integral therewith, and a second clutch section connected directly to the spring in the drum and adapted to engage with the clutch section on the wheel B when the drum is in place, and means connected with said wheel B, for winding the spring, a train of gear driven therefrom,substantially as described.
4. In a motor, the combination of gear-wheel B, a friction plate controlled by the movement of said gear wheel B, a pawl mounted upon a fixed part of the motor and connecting with said friction-plate, whereby a movement; of the gear-wheel in one direction will cause the pawl to engage the teeth of the gear-wheel, and prevent further movement thereof, and a movement of the gear-wheel in the opposite direction will cause the pawl to be disengaged therefrom, substantially as described.
