EDWIN M. BUSHNELL, OF EASTON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE BUSHNELL MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CAR= S EAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 547,749, dated October 8, 1895.
Application filed June 19, 1895. Serial No. 553,253- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN M. BUSHNELL,- a citizen of the United States, residing at Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Seats,
' of which the following is a specification, refervention; Fig. 2, a sectional view from front to rear. Fig. 3 is a detail view.
The end frames of the seat are shown at A, connected by parallel bars B, forming a support for the seat D. The back is shown at D and is secured to depending arms E, which have enlargements a at their lower ends, which carry on their outer faces rollers b, j ournaled upon pins supported in said enlargements. These rollers enter recesses c in the ends of the seat-frames, which may be either open slots or simply recesses, as shown, and the bottoms of these recesses or slots are curved to correspond to the necessary movement of the seat. They form tracks for the rollers and have depressions at each end, so that as the seat is moved from one side to the other the rollers enter the depressions and give the necessary inclination to the back.
In order to give the shifting movement to the seat to keep it in its proper relation to the back, I provide brackets c for the seat, provided with slots adapted to engage with a longitudinal rod (1, and this rod is mounted upon the shorter arms of levers e, pivoted at f, and connected through their longer arms to the enlargements a through a slot-and-pin connection d. It will thus be observed that in the shifting of the back the rod engaging the seat will also shift in a corresponding manner and thus maintain the proper relation between the seat and back.
What I claim is In combination, a movable back, depending arms secured thereto, rollers carried by said arms, recesses in the end frames adapted to receive said rollers, a seat alongitudinal rod, pivoted levers carrying said rod, the upper ends of said levers engaging the depending arms and moved thereby, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN M. BUSHNELL.
