Description

J. MONTGOMERY. Car-Axle Box.
Patented May 15, 1866.
dam dz fnueniaz" N4 PETERS. PMOTO-UTHOGRAPHER, WAsmNGToN, ma
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH MONTGOMERY, OF HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVED AXLE-BOX.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,753, dated May 15, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH MONTGOMERY, of the city of Harrisburg, county of Dauphin, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Journal or Oil-Box for Oar-Axles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters of reference marked thereon, like letters representing like parts in the several figures.
The nature of my invention consists in a peculiar construction ofmy box and its several parts, whereby it is easily and safely operated, is more secure, and it promotes economy, &c.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation; Fig. 2, a side elevation,and Fig. 3 a vertical section through a b.
Areprescnts the lid of the box, hinged below at a. B is its handle, connecting with a tightening-cam, b, on the inside in a certain position, part of its flange taking under and behind a recess, b, in top part of box. This arrangement enables the lid A to be drawn up very tightly against the front edges of the box, thereby saving much oil.
0 represents the box, into which the outer end of the axle enters, as usual, and can be secured in place in any well-known manner.
The bottompart of my box is inclined upward at the front or outside, thus leaving a good space for the oil. Resting on this incline is a loose rack-frame, c, which may be pivoted in front and through its inner and lower part.
I l l l Holes h are made, as many as necessary, to permit the oil to saturate the packing or stuffing behind and under or around the axle. This frame not only permits a space in front for a reservoir of oil, but keeps the packing behind it in place, preventing its working forward. Oil can rise up behind fixed partition 19.
In my arrangement oflid,jamming-cam, and its handle, the latter, from its weight and position whenthe box is closed, tends to keep the same securely closed, preventing leakage, particularly if cork or other elastic substances be inserted in recesses orgrooves in the box or lid where they come in contact; but this I do not consider necessary.
By actual experiment I have found, usinga full-sized working model, that one oiling, of about one and a half pint, sufficed for one journal for a distance of nearly one thousand miles.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The journal box 0, arranged and constructed substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth. I
2. The lid A, hinged below, and secured by handle B and jamming-cam I), constructed and operating substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The loose or hinged rack-frame 0 inside of box, constructed and operating substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
J OS. MONTGOMERY.
