Be it known that I, JOHN C. CoLLINs, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Sangamon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label-Holders for Can-La beling Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itapperlains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an improvement in label-holders for can-labeling machines; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and definitely pointed in the claims.

The invention is primarily designed to be used with labeling-machines wherein the can is rolled over a receptacle containing the la hole, and the aim and purpose thereof is to prevent the labels from twisting or turning out of line and to permit but one label at a time being picked up by the paste-coated can.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is an. elevation of the label-holder and the holding-knives. Fig. 2 isa cross-section thereof, showing the knives in elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a knife.

In the drawings, A designates the verticallymovable bottom, and O designates the track, all of known form. On the track 0 are secured at opposite sides depending brackets D having suitable bearings formed in their lower ends, in which I are mounted the horizontal shafts E. The forward ends of the shafts E are preferably squared and carry the knives 1*, which are tapered and formed with the laterally-offset blades f, projecting normally over the labels contained in the receptacle. The blades are tapered to a point, their lower edges being sharpened. The upper ends of the knives pass up between the track and labels and preferably through slots in the track.

To hold the knives in place, spiral springs G are sleeved on the shafts E, one end being made fast to the brackets and the opposite ends be ing secured to an adjustable collar H on the shaft. The adjustment of the collars is had by set-screws II, and the tension of the springs may thereby be varied.

In structures heretofore the holding-knives have been straight on their under face or edge, and they would not properly grip the paper labels and would also cause an irregular tear. By the use of spring-pressed pointed blades with sharpened inclined sides the labels are held in their proper position and easily and perfectly picked from the holder, and as the can proceeds over the knives the'labels are quickly out or released from the knives.

I am aware that minor changes can be made and substituted for some of the parts shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my inven tion.

Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a label holder, the combination with the holder, of a knife having an offset blade formed with a pointed inclined lower edge, normally projecting over the holder, and a spring for moving the knife, substantially as described. 1

2. In a label holder, the combination with the holder, of a spring-pressed swinging knife having an offset blade formed with a tapered sharpened inner edge and pointed, substantially as described.

3. In a labeling machine, the combination with the label holder, of means for retaining the upper label in place, comprising a plurality of knives having pointed blades projecting downwardly, springs for normally holding the knives over the labels, and means for varying the tension of the springs, substantially as described.
