To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH J. ADGATE, a citi- 'zen of the United States, residing at Liberty, New York, have made certain new and useful Improvements in (Jam-Cylinders for Knitting-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists more particularly in the details hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure l is a View of my improved cam-cylinder, and Fig. 2 shows the position of the needle-jacks in the cylinder.
Similar letters of reference designate similar parts in the drawings.
A is my improved cam-cylinder, which is provided at its upper inner edge with a thin ring B, screwed or riveted to the cylinder A.
O O are metal rods bent so as to form between them the cam-race D. These rods may be in sections, if desired. They are secured to the cylinder by rivets or bolts. To allow for the play of the needles, as hereinafter explained, I perfer to make 0 O thicker than B, so as to allow the jack to play at the top. This construction af ords between the ring B and the rod 0 a space or chamber E, into which the lint may fall without clogging the needles. I also secure a similar chamber E below the rod C. By this method of constructing my cam-race I avoid the breaks formed by joining plates, riveted on the inside of the ring, as in cam-cylinders heretofore made, and secure a uniform and smooth surface, with cheapness and convenience of construction.
Fig. 2 shows the position of the crooked needle W when depressed. The bond in the needle necessarily throws the upper end of the jack forward, and to allow for this I reduce the thickness of the ring B, which permits the upper end of the jack to play as much as is necessary in its descent. It will be understood that if my cam-cylinder is used with straight needles only then ring B would not be reduced in thickness.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The improved cam cylinder consisting of the ring A, ring B and rods 0 and 0' substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. An improved cam cylinder, having the cam race formed between two bars or rods fastened to the inner surface of the cylinder substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
