POWER-TRANSMITTING MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,951, dated September 24, 1895.
Application filed March 21, 1895. Serial No. 542,673. (No model.)
2 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CONRAD BERNHARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and usefullmprovements in Power-Transmitting Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an easy-running power-transmitting mechanism; and the invention consists in the novel features of construction set forth in the following specification and claims, and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the powertransmitting mechanism with the drivinggear in mesh. Fig. 2 is a section along a: 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of parts of Fig. 1, with the driving-gear out of mesh, the actuator or treadle being removed or seetioned away.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a stand. A sewing-machine stand is shown, as I have found the device useful on sewingmachines, although not necessarily confined thereto in its application.
The fly-wheel 2 on its shaft 3 receives motion from pulley-and-belt connection 4 5 6, the pulley 6 being mounted on shaft 7.
The stand has secured thereto an arm 8, carrying a fulcrum or pivot 9, on which swings the actuator or lever 10 11, practically made in form of a treadle. The lever-arm 11 has a slot 12, through which extends roller-stud 13, secured to arm 14. The arms 11 and 14 are thus loosely connected by the slot-and'pin connection 12 and 13. On the fulcrum 9 swings a support comprising what may be called a centralor hub portion 15, from which extend arms 16 and 17. The hub portion carries a guide or way 18 for the sliding arm 14, loosely connected to the hub portion by slot-and- pin connection 19 and 20. Then the treadle or actuator 10 is moving in the direction of arrow 21, so as to make its actuating stroke, the inclined slot 12 of actuator arm 11 will cause the arm 14 to slide outward or away from fulcrum 9. The return stroke of actuator 10, indicated by arrow 22, will cause arm 14 to slide toward the fulcrum 9. The oscillations of the actuator 10 are at the same time imparted to the support 15 16 17 and to arm 14.
Fixed to the arm 14 is a segment or gear 23. When the actuator 10 makes an actuating stroke the arm 14, sliding outward, will move the gear23 into mesh with gear 24, Fig. 1, so that the gear 23, partaking of the actuating stroke or swing of actuator 10, will rotate gear 24 with the shaft 7 and pulley 6, already named. The return stroke of actuator 10 will draw back the slide-arm 14 with gear 23, so that the latter will be out of mesh with the gear 24, Fig. 3, while making the return stroke with actuator 10. The gear 23 can be distinguished as a driving-gear, since it drives the gear 24, which latter may be called a transmission-gear. The drivinggear 23 is shown steadied by being loosely connected to the arms 16 and 17 by slot-and-pin connections 25 and 26.
The hub portion 15 is cast or provided with a sleeve 27, Fig. 2, which surrounds fulcrum 9 and against which sleeve 27 acts, aspring or brake 28 somewhat retarding the oscillations of the support 15 16 17, so that a stroke of actuator 10 will first cause the inclined slot 12 to slide arm 14 in or out to move gear 23 out of mesh or into mesh before the support 15 16 17 partakes of the oscillation or swing of the actuator 10. Instead of one treadle or actuator 10, a pair of alternating actuators, each with its transmitting mechanism, as described, can be applied, as readily understood.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a transmission gear, of a support, a driving gear slidingly mounted on said support, and an actuator connected with said driving gear to throw the same into engagement with the transmission gear on the driving stroke and to withdrawit from said engagement on the return stroke, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a transmission gear of an oscillating support, a driving gear slidingly mounted on said support, and an actuator loosely connected to the driving gear to throw the same into engagement with the transmission gear on the driving stroke and to withdraw the same from said engagement on the return stroke, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a transmission gear, of an oscillating support, a driving gear slidingly mounted on said support, an actuator loosely connected to the driving gear to throw the same into engagement with the transmission gear on the driving stroke and to withdraw it from said engagement on the return stroke, and a brake for retarding the motion of said oscillating support, substantially as described.
4:. The combination with a transmission gear, of a support, a driving gear slidingly connected to said support by pin and slot connections, and an actuator connected to said driving gear by means of a pin and slot connection whereby said driving gear is thrown into engagement with the transmission gear during the driving stroke and withdrawn from such engagement during the return stroke, substantially as described.
5. A transmission gear and a driving gear therefor, combined with a support and an actuator, said support comprising a central or hub portion and arms made to extend from said hub portion, said arms being loosely connected to said driving gear, a guide or way carried by said hub portion, an arm for the driving gear guided by said way and loosely connected to said hub portion, and an actuator loosely connected to the driving gear substantially as described.
6. A transmission gear and a driving gear therefor, combined with a support and an actuator, said support being provided with a guide or way, an arm for the driving gear guided by said way and loosely connected to the support, and an actuatorloosely connected to the driving gear substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
