SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,711, dated September 24, 1895. Application filed April 11, 1895. Serial No. 545,300. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EUeEN'SANDow, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Combined Bath-Tub and Trunk, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the com bined tub and trunk with the lid thereof raised. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section; and Fig. 3 is a detail, enlarged, being a section through a portion of the trunk-lid and the front wall of the trunk.

This invention relates to trunks for travelers, and has for its leading object to combine in the form of a trunk a bath-tub and a series of trays adapted to be placed within the combined trunk and bath-tub, which trays are capable of being securely locked together, so that when removed from the trunk they will form in themselves, in their locked condition, what maybe termeda secondary trunk, in which travelers wearing apparel may be retained safely while the trunk proper is put to use as a bath-tub.

Another object of this invention is to provide a construction that will effectively guard the contents from becoming injured by dampness when the trunk is used for thetransportation of clothing, &c., aboard ships.

These objects I accomplish as illustrated in the drawings and as hereinafter described.

Those things which I regard as new will be set forth in theclaims.

In the drawings, A representsa trunk-body, and'A' represents its cover. As shown, the trunk-body with its cover is formed with eight sides or faces, which is a very convenient form, but which, of course, may be varied from at the pleasure of the constructor.

a indicates a lining for the trunk-body and its cover, which may be made of zinc, aluminum, or of any material of a waterproof character. Secured in any suitable manner to the upper edge of the trunk-body A is an elastic strip 19, preferably of rubber, which, when the cover A is closed, enters and fits snugly a l groove 0, formed in the lower edge of such cover. By this means a moisture-proof and air-proof joint is formed, which, in connection with the lining a, insures the contents of the trunk being preserved from damage by moisture at all times, and especially when the trunk is being used for the reception of clothingbeing transported by water.

O O G 0 indicate a series of trays, all of which, except the upper one in the constructionrepresented by the drawings, are open at the top, and, as shown, the trays rest one upon another.

D D indicate metal straps or bands, each encircling the series of trays near one end and each provided with a suitable lock' for uniting the ends of the strap or hand. These straps or bands are preferably made of thin steel or iron, but, of course, may be made of any suitable material. As shown, they are each'set in a shallow groove formed on the outside of the series of trays, so that the surface of the straps or hands is flush with the surface of the trays that they surround. By

After the trays have been thus removed the trunk-body A, by reason of its being lined with a waterproof material, can be readily and quickly converted into use as a bathtub. By the construction shown the traveler is always provided with a bath-tub, and by means of the trays that can be locked together with a device that for indoor use answers all the purposes of a regular trunk. This device will be found of especial value to travelers stopping at small hotels where proper bathing conveniences are frequently not to be found. I provide a trunk that has all of the advantages possessed by an ordinary trunk provided with trays, with the added advantage of a person being enabled to remove the entire contents at once and leave them without further attention in an inclosed condition,

thus permitting the trunk proper to be put to use as a bath-tub or to be temporarily put to some other use, thus giving the owner the advantages of two trunks for the time being. lVhen desired, the trays can be readily separated from each other by unlocking the locks (l and laying back the ends of the straps or bands D D.

It is contemplated that the several trays should be made of light, yet strong material, in order that they may, when locked together, be readily removed from the trunk-body, and at the same time when so removed afford sufficient protection for the contents.

That which I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a trunk body lined with water-proof material, of a series of trays entirely filling said trunk body and locked together for entire simultaneous removal there- 20 from, substantially as described.

2. The combination with a trunk body lined with a water proof material, of a series of trays adapted to fit in said trunk body and means for looking said trays together for simultane- 2 5 ous removal therefrom, substantially as described.
