COMBINED WIRE=STRETCHER AND CARRIAGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,696, dated September 24, 1895. Application filed October 17, 18941 Serial No. 626,114- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. DUNLAP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maquoketa, in the county of Jackson and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new, useful, and valuable Improvement in a Combined Wire-Stretcher and Carriage, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention has relation to wire-reel carriages and wire-stretchers combined, adapted especially to be used in building wire fences; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the invention. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views of partsof the invention, and they will be explained hereinafter.
The device consists of a set of standards 1 1 and a set of standards 2 2, the upper ends of one set of standards being pivoted to the upper ends of the other set by means of a rod 3, passing through the said standards. The lower ends of the standards 1 1 are connected by the rod 4, and the lower ends of the standards 2 2 are connected by the rod 5. Each of the standards 1 1 is provided with a casting 6, (see Fig. 5,) and each of. the said castings has an axle 7, on which is journaled a wheel 8. Said axles extend laterally beyond the outer sides of the standards, but not beyond the inner opposite sides thereof. One of the standards 2 is providediwith a bearing 9, and the other standard 2 is provided with a bearing 10. (See Fig. 4.) Said bearing consists of two parts hinged together. One part is provided with a staple l1, and the other part is provided with a perforation 12 and a hook 13. The staple 11 is adapted to pass through the perforation, and the hook 13 passes through the end of the staple 11,and thereby holds the two parts of 'the'bearing together.
The shaft 14 is journaled in the bearings 9 and 10, and said shaft is provided with the handles 15 15, the pawl and ratchet l6, and
the clamp 17. The spool of wire 18 fits on the shaft 14, and the clamp 17 grips on the side piece 19 of the said spool, and thus the spool is made rigid with the shaft. The shaft and spool are removed from the device by opening the bearing 10.
' The lower ends of the standards 2 2 are provided with the angle-castings 20 20, which are sharpened at one end and are adapted to enter the ground andthus form ananchor for the device while stretching the wire. The standards 2 2 are also provided with the feet 21 21, which are adapted to rest at their lower ends on the standards 1 1 (see Fig. 2) when the device is used as a carriage.
When the device is used as a carriage, it is rolled about on the wheels 8 8, and when it is to be used as a wire-stretcher it is tilted up on end and the anchors 2O driven in the ground and the device is then ready for stretching the wire 22.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A wire stretcher consisting of two sets of straight standards pivoted together at their upper ends, a spool of wire located on one set of standards below the pivotal point, said sets of standards adapted to be placed on end on the surface of the ground at an angle to each other, and each 'set at an angle to the surface of the ground, anchors secured to the lower ends of one set of standards on the opposite side of the spool from which the wire is unwound, said anchors extending substantially at right angles to the standards to which they are attached and adapted to be driven in the ground at an acute angle to the upper surface thereof when the standards are placed on the ground at an angle to each other, and a set of traction wheels journaled to the outer per pendicular sides of the standards without anchors, as set forth.
