Description
(No Model.)
G. L. CARRUTHERS.
ROW MARKER FOR GARDENS.
No. 546,653. Patented Sept. 24, 1895;
NITED STATES GEORGE L. OARRUTHERS, OF COTTON VALLEY, LOUISIANA.
ROW-MARKER FOR GARDENS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 546,653, dated September 24, 1895.
Application filed July 22, 1895. Serial No. 556,810. (1% model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. OABRUTH- ERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cotton Valley, in the parish of Webster and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Row-Markers for Gardens; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in devices for use in marking rows for seed-planting in gardens.
To this end, and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the peculiar construction and in the novel combination, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawing, and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, forms a part of this specification, and in which drawing I- show a perspective view of a row-marker embodying my improvements.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawing by letter, A designates the body portion of the marker, which is preferably of wood and may be of any suitable or preferred length. The sides are cut away at their lower edges, thus forming a sharpened edge B, which serves to form the row when the device is moved forward, as hereinafter described.
C is a handle, somewhat similar in form to the ordinary plow-handle in common use, said handle having the lower end mortised into or otherwise secured to the upper face of the body timber A and being supported by an upright D, to the upper end of which it is attached.
E E are vertical rods having their upper ends bifurcated or forked, as shown at F. These rods are set in the upper face of the body timber A, one being set at a point adjacent to the forward end of the device and the other at or near the point at which the lower end of the handle joins the body portion. The office of the vertical rods E is to insure the marker being in the right alignment when the operator squints across the notches with an eye.
At or near the longitudinal center of the timber A rises a vertical rod or post G, upon which may be placed a weight H, it being designed to have a series of weights of different sizes, so that by changing the weight, as the conditions under which the marker is used may vary, perfect work at all times is assured.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a row marker for making gardens, the body portion having a suitable operating handle, in combination with vertical standards, notched at their upper extremities to be used in leveling the device, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein described row marker, the same consisting essentially of a body portion or timber having its lower edge sharpened, a handle at one end of said timber, the standards E, notched at their upper ends, and rising from the upper face of the timber in advance of the handle, and a post G rising from the upper face of the body portion and designed to retain in place a weight, all combined substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE L. GARRUTI-IERS.
