WINDOW-SHADE CORNICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,296, dated September 17, 1895. Application filed August 14, 1894. Serial No. 520,270. (No model.)

To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL BOYER, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Cressona, 1n the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Winde w-Shade Cornices; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. lily invention relates to improvements in that class of devices or appliances known as window-shade cornices; and it has for its ob- ;gect to provide a simple andimproved device of this character which will possess advantages in point of adjustability, convenience, adaptability, effectiveness, and general efciency.

To these ends the invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafterfmore fully disclosed, and pointed ont specificallyjn the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is an under side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional View. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail cross-sections. Figs. 6 and 7 are detail perspective views of an attaching clamp or claw for the appliance and of a roller-bracket, respectively, as herein employed. Fig. 8 isa detail rear elevation. Fig. 9 is a detail perspective view illustrating the cross-slitted posts.

The cornice-piece l in its general outline is of usual or any approved construction, having a front longitudinal section or member la and end sections or members l", secured to the irstsnamed member. Upon the inner side of the front section or member 1a are suitably secured two aligned horizontally-grooved guides 2, with their grooves opening rearward, arranged one upon each side of and spaced apartfrom a central similarly-grooved piece or bracket 3, also secured tothe same section or member.

Guideways 4, preferably in the form of pieces of sheet metal fastened to the guides 2, are applied to the grcoved surfaces thereof, the inner longitudinal edges of said guideways forming flanges offset from the bottoms of the grooved surfaces to form therewith grooves 4f to receive and Within which are adapted to slide the dat shank portions of .preferably claw-ended clamps 5 to grasp the sides of the window-frame in adjusting the cornices in position. These clamps or claws have attached to the inner ends of their shank portions one end of each of two tapes o r lines 6, the opposite ends of which are connected to a common shaft 7, so as to wind in opposite directions, whereby the clamps or claws are adaptedto be drawn or slid toward and caused to clamp the sides of the window-frame by turning the shaft 7 in the required direction.

The shaft '7 is held from reverse movement by a retaining-pawl S, pivoted in a rabbet in the rear of the member or section l and engaging a ratchet S, fixed to said shaft. A suitable wrench or crank is used for conven iently actuating the shaft '7, adapted for that purpose.

Upon the under sides of the guides 2 are also guideways 9 for the reception of the shade-roller gudgeon supports or brackets l0, as shown, within which guideways said brackets'are adapted to slide. These guideways are formed, preferably, of sheet-metal plates 9a, with one longitudinal edge turned inward and formed into a groove 9b and the opposite edge interlapped with the lower corresponding edge of the lower one of the sheetmetal pieces 4, turned inward and below the plates 9, so as to form a groove 9C, the counterpart of groove 9b, conjointly forming the guideways 9. The supports or brackets lO yhave connected to the upturned inner ends of their horizontal shank portions l0 one end of each of two cords or lines 11, passing to and up through vertical apertures lla in the central bracket 3, and thence in opposite directions and hitched in cross-slitted posts 1lb, with their free ends anchored in any suitable way, as shown, to prevent the accidental displacement of the same. By means of this arrangement it will be seen that the shaderoller gu dgeon-brackets are adapted to beslid in the guideways to accommodate the width of the shade with its roller. It is also apparent from what has been above set forthV that the appliance or cornice can be readily and conveniently secured into position upon the window-frame with all the shade parapher- IOO nalia in place thereon, and can all be readily taken down intact when required.

Brackets I2, one adapted to be seated in one of the slits of each of the posts 1lb, may be used to support a curtain-pole when it is desired to use such. Otherwisegthe brackets may be readily removed or not be brought into service at all.

I have herein shown the cords or lines as secured to the pole-fixtures; but it will be understood that these cords or lines may be fastened in any suitable or desired manner and at any adapted point.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A device of the class described, com prising the cornice-piece proper having the guide members 2, the guide-ways 4 secured to the inner face of the latter and forming the grooves 4l, the guide-Ways 9 secured to the under side of the guide members 2 and having their longitudinal edges forming the guide grooves 9b and 9C, the outer edge of the guide- Ways 9 being overlapped by the lower corresponding edge of the guide-ways 4, substantially as set forth, the clamps or claws having their shank portions accommodated and sliding in the grooves 4C, the supports or brackets IO having their shank portions accommodated and sliding within the grooves 9b and 9, and independent means for controlling the adjustment of the clamps or claws and of the supports or brackets, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The herein-described window cornice and curtain support device, comprising the cornice-piece proper formed of the front longitudinal section or member l carrying the grooved guide members 2, the guide-ways 4 secured to the inner grooved face of the members 2 and having their longitudinal edges conjointly forming the groove 4, the guideways 9 secured to the under sides of the members 2 and having their longitudinal edges forming the grooves 9b and 9, the clamps or claws 5 having their shanks accommodated and sliding in the grooves Lt, the supports or brackets 10 having their shanks accommodated and sliding in the grooves 9b and 9C, the intermediate central member or bracket 3 secured to the section or member la, the transverse horizontal shaft 7 mounted in the bracket 3, the tapes or lines 6 passing from the clamps to said shaft, and the cords or lines ll passing respectively from the supports l0 to the bracket 3 and respectively through vertical slots or apertures in the latter, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a device of the class described, comprising the cornice-piece proper, the posts lll mounted upon the latter and cross-slitted vertically substantially as set forth, in combination with the removable pole supporting brackets l2 adapted to be set in the cross-slits of said posts, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. A device of the class describedcompris ing the cornice-piece proper having the guide members 2 with the groovedinner faces, the guide-ways tsecured in said grooved surfaces and having their inner longitudinal edges offset from the bottoms of said grooves to conjointly form the grooves 4a, the guide-ways 9 secured to the under side of the guide members 2 and having their longitudinal edges forming the guide grooves 9b and 9, the clamps or claws having their shank portions accommodated and sliding in the grooves 4C, the supports or brackets 10 having their shank portions accommodated and sliding within the grooves 9b and 9c, and independent means for controlling the adjustment of the clamps or claws and of the supports or brackets, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
