Be it known that we, HORACE FRONEFIELD, residing at Clifton, in the county of Delaware, State of Pennsylvania, and STACY K. MAXWELL and J osnrrr F. MAXWELL, residing at Mcrchantville, in the county of Camden, State of New Jersey, citizens of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locking-Stands for Umbrellas, Canes, the, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

Our invention consists of improvements in locking-stands for umbrellas, canes, &c., the novel features of which will be hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a locking-stand for an umbrella, cane, &c., embodying our invention. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the same. Figs. 3 and 4 representplan views of detached portions. Fig. 5 represents a section on line a; 9:, Fig. 2.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a drip-pa,n, and B designates a standard provided with feet placed in said pan. 0 designates a horizontaily-arranged spider or frame secured to the lower portion of said stand 13 and having the eyes or rings D formed on the outer end of radiating arms thereof. E designates a frame or spider which is secured to the upper portion of said standard 13, the construction of which is best seen in Fig. 2, said frame consisting of the central portion F and the radial arms G, at the ends of which are the segmental or other shaped faces 11, which are joined by the pieces J, which, with said faces ll, form a rim for said spider E, it being noticed that said faces H are over the rings D of the spider C.

K designates shackles which are pivotally attached to the rim of the frame E, and adapted to close the faces H, they being provided with holes L for the reception of suitable keys for the operation of the locks L, a form of one of which is shown in Fig. 5; but it is desired to construct the looks or keyholes in such manner that when the keys are operated to unlock the shackles they cannot be withdrawn, whereby loss of the same is prevented,

the keys thus acting as handles for convcniently opening said shackles.

M designates a plate which is secured to the standard B above the spider E and provided with the guards N, which are in alignment with handles of umbrellas, canes, the, when the latter are in position on the stand, as shown at P and Q, Fig. 1. The operation is as follows: When an umbrella or cane is to be placed on the stand, the key of the desired shackle is operated so as to unlock the same, and said umbrella or cane may then be inserted in the proper ring D of the spider G and rested against theeorrespending face H, the handle being under the guard N. The shackle is then closed and locked and the owner of the umbrella or cane removes the key, it being evident that the article is reliably held on the stand in locked condition atboth its ferrule and handle ends and prevented from being abstracted. Nhen, however, the key is again inserted and operated, the shackle may be unlocked and opened, whereby the article is free to be removed from the stand.

Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A locking stand for umbrellas, consisting of a central standard, a lower spider secured thereon having rings on its periphery, an upper spider with pivoted shackles having openings for keys, and a plate with guards above said shackles, said parts being combined substantially as described.

2. The standard 13, the bottom spider G, and the upper spider E with the locking shackles K thereon, in combination with the stationary top plate M, said spiders and plate being parallel and secured centrally to said standard, said plate having the peripheral guards N and said shackles having key holes therein receiving keys as handles for moving the shackles in opposite directions, substantially as described.
