Description
iclnirrnn Sra'rss hnrnnrr RUDOLPH L. ZARETZKY, OF CHICAGO, lLLlNOlS.
FASTENER FQR TROUSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,213, dated September 10, 1895.
Application filed April 16, 1895 To us whom it may concern Be it known that I, RUDOLPH L. ZARETZKY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fasteners for Trousers, of which the following is a specification.
lily invention relates to improvements in fasteners of the class constructed on the principle of the hook and eye and now very generally employed in the place of buttons and buttonholes for fastening together the meeting flaps of trousers at the fronts and tops or waisthands thereof. The fasteners of this class hitherto in general use have been so constructed as to necessitate their beingsecured to the trouseri'laps by sewing, and are objectionable mainly for the reason that the hook and loop pieces must be fastened in place by sewing them upon strips of cloth which are in turn sewed in the waistband, all of which is troublesome, and, unless care is exercised, insecure. Furthermore, as the parts must be sewed in place separately, any deviation from measurements,
which must be carefully made, will cause the parts to be out of register when the flaps are to be closed and fastened. A further objection to the fasteners hitherto employed isthat they must in practice he sewed in place before the trousers are finished and pressed, andin the pressing operation the presence of the hook and loop is apt to cause the goose to leave a shiny surface on the trousers material where it covers the fastener.
My object is to provide a fastener of the above class which may be attached to the flaps without the necessity of sewing, and afford a particularly strong and durable securing means for its purpose, and which may be applied after the trousers are pressed, and in a manner to obviate all danger of the parts being out of register.
To the above ends my invention consists in the general and details of construction and combinations of parts of my improved fastoner, as hereinafter described and claimed in the drawings, Figure l is a broken perspective view of a portion of a pair of trousers, showing the flaps provided with my improved fastener; Fig. 2, a plan view of the blank from which the hook-piece portion of the fastener is formed; Fig. 3, a section on line 3 of Fig.
Serial No. 545,943. (No m d l.)
1; Figs. tand 5, plan views of the parts forming the loop portion of the fastener, and Fig. 6 a section taken on line 6 of Fig. 1.
A is the hook-piece portion of the fastener, which is formed from the blank (shown in Fig. 2) by bending the lattercn itself at the dotted line as, whereby the portion A becomes 'the outer plate and the portion A the inner plate of the hook-piece. The blank is preferably stamped out of asheet or strip of more or less pliable sheet metal, the outer plate A being formed with one or more, but preferably two, points z, projecting from its corners, and a tongue 5, which should be raised slightly from a body of the plate and shaped as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The plate material should also be cut away to produce the opening 7' in the tongue and which extends past the line 9;,
as indicated in Fig. 2. In the plate portion A are slots g, which are in position to register with and receive the points 25 when the lat ter are bent to extend at right angles to the body portion of the plate A.
The loop-piece portion B comprises a front strip B, terminating at opposite ends in shoulders p and points 22, which, as the devices are provided, are bent to a right angle to the body portion at the dotted lines y and a back strip 13 provided at opposite end portions with sockets n at a distance apart equal to that be tween the dotted lines y y in Fig. 4. 1
Before applying the fastener to a pair of trousers the latter may be completed and pressed ready for the wearer, the usual opening being'left, however, in the seam at the edge e of the flap Z, between the inner and outer thicknesses or layers of cloth, for the insertion of the hook-piece A, and the lining on the inner side of the flap Z is left open at its edge for a short distance for the insertion of the part B of the loop-piece. The part A of the hook-piece is passed into the opening thus left in the edge of the flap Z, to cause the 9 front and back plates to embrace the inner layer of the flap, and the pointstare inserted through the cloth of the flap Z. The position of the loop is thus accurately located. The back plate B is then passed between the in? nor lining and outer cloth of the flap Z, to receive at its slots 01 the points p, which latter are then upset upon the rear face of the plate B as shown in Fig. 6. lVhen the fas tener is in place, the opening at the edge of the lining of the flap Z may be closed by sewing, and the inner and outer thicknesses of cloth of the flap Z should also be fastened together with a stitch at z through the opening r of the tongue. The points passing through the cloth and back plates and upset upon the latter, as described, aitord an exceedingly strong and durable securing means. The metal should be of a thickness sutficient to prevent the points, as they are passed through the cloth and in after use from cutting the threads of the latter, and to give sufficient strength to the tongue and loop. The back plates tend greatly to strengthen the parts and render them secure without their; presence being apparent.
Altogether my improved fastener possesses qualities which render it more desirable, both to the tailor who applies it and to the wearer of the trousers, than any other fastener of which I am aware.
. hat I claim as new, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A fastener for tronsersfiaps, comprising, in combination, a hook-piece formed with a front-plate provided with a tongue and a pliable cloth-penetrating point, and a back-plate, parallel with the front plate, and provided With a shoulder to engage the upset point, and a loop-piece, substantially as described.
2. A fastener for trousers-flaps, comprising, in combination, a hook-piece A formed with an opening 1', a front-plate A, provided with a tongue .9, and pliable cloth penetrating points i, and a back-plate A having point-receiving slots q, and a loop-piece, substantially as described.
