SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,188, dated September 10, 1895.

To azZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. PYM, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Vindsor, in the county of Essex and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lasting-Jacks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention consists, particularly, in the peculiar construction of the support for the jack-frame, whereby it may be adjusted in any desired position,so that the operator can work upon the shoe to the best possible adr5 vantage in position as well as light, and regardless of whether the operator is 'a right or left handed person.
The invention further consists in the peculiar construction of the heel-post, and further in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts, all as more fully hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is aside elevation of my improved jack. Fig. 2 is a similar 2 5 elevation, partly in seotion,showing the last in position upon the jack. Fig. 3 is a verti' cal section through the top of the standard, illustrating the construction of the joint between the standard and bracket. B is an apertured plate secured to the top of the bench and having the depending semicircular socket O, to which are secured the clamping-bolts D, the heads of which enter a groove in the standard E, whereby this standard may be vertically adjusted to any de- 0 sired height. In the top of this standard is the pin 13 of a head G. This pin is provided with a groove H, in which is the semicylindrical friction-block 1, against which a set-screw l bears, which allows the head to swivel from 5 the top of the standard,but prevents its accidental disengagement therefrom.
J is a plate preferably formed integral with the head G and having the central circular stud .l' on one side thereof, upon which is pivoted a bracket K. This bracket is held in its adjusted position upon this stud by means of the clamping-bolt K, passing through the plate J and through a corresponding movable plate K upon the opposite side of the bracket, the two being clamped together by means of a winged nut L or in any othersuitable manner. I preferably limit the movement of the bracket K to its pivot by means of a lug M, formed on the plate and engaging in a semicircular groove in the bearing of the bracket, Go with a stop at each end,so that when it is turned to the limit of its movement in either direction it will be supported in that position by the lug M bearing against the stop. This bracket at its outer end is provided with a circular bearing N, in which is swiveled a pin 0, formed centrally or substantially so of the jack-frame O. This pin is provided with a groove 11 a corresponding semicylindrical block I, and a set-screw to hold the block in 73 position, thereby allowing thejack-frame to be swiveled in the bracket and prevent its disengagement therefrom.
The jack-frame is provided with an adjustable toe-rest P, and on its opposite end with 75 the heel-standard P, preferably formed integral with the lasting-frame. This heelstandard is centrally apertured to receive a coil spring Q, which at its lower end is provided with an adjusting-bolt Q, having a suitable nut or other suitable means of applying tensiontothespring. 'lhisspringisexpanded and at its opposite end is secured to the forward edge of the pivoted heel-pin block R, which is pivoted at its rear edge upon a pivot R, extending transversely of the heel-post. This heel-pin block is provided with a suitable pin S to engage in the last. The tension of the spring is suflicientto draw the block R to the inclined position shown in Fig. 1, and the operator, engaging the pin S into the socket in the last and turning the last to a substantially horizontal position, will put the spring under tension, so that when the toe rests at the top of the toe'support the tension of the spring will hold it firmly in position. The result of this construction is that I am enabled to adjust the last-frame at any point around the standard, and at any point of adjustment I am enabled 'to adjust the too last-frame itself at any angle to the standard, by turning the bracket K upon its pivot and the last-frame upon its pivot. Part of the adjustability of the device is illustrated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, where the bracket is shown turned to a vertical position, the lastframe extending horizontally, and it is evident that it may be turned entirely about its pivot while in this position, or the entire device may be turned around to the left hand of the standard by simply turning the head G upon its pivot.
WVhat I claim as my invention is- 1. In alasting jack, the combination of the vertically adjustable standard, the head swiveled at the top thereof and provided with a pivot extending across the standard, a bracket journaled on that pivot and adapted to swing over the standard, and a lasting jack frame pivoted in the end of that bracket, substantially as described.
2. In a lasting jack, the combination of the tubular standard, the head G at the upper end thereof, the pin F on said head entering the upper end of the standard and having a groove H and a semi-circular block I engaging in said groove, the set screw 1 for looking the said block in position, the bracket pivoted to the head and the lasting frame supported on the bracket, substantially as described.
8. In a lasting jack, the combination of the standard, the head G swiveled at the upper end thereof and comprising the plate J, the laterally extending apertured lug J, the plate K the bracket K journaled on the lug J and having a semi-circular groove in its outer face and a lug N on the plate J, engaging in said groove, substantially as described.
