SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No..546,111, dated September 10, 1895.
Application iiled April 2, 1895 Serial N0- 5441215' (N0 11105913 use of presiding ofiicers in all deliberative assemblies, secret societies, duc., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gongs to be used in parliamentary bodies, and is designed as a substitute for the ordinary block of wood or marble which the presiding ofiicer strikes with his gavel during the deliberations of the body. It also relates to a call-bell attachment which can be sounded independently of the bell.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gong apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is avertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan view, the top and the gong or vibra# tor removed. Fig. i is a section on the line xx, Fig. 3.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates a box, preferably triangular in form, and comprising the bottom 2, the sides 3, made of open or fret work and the top 4, havingatriangular openingtherein. Secured to the bottom of this box is a bifurcated standard 5, having a screw-threaded aperture at its upper-end.
The numeral 6 designates an approximately triangular metal plate secured to said standard by means of a screw 7, engaging with the screw-threaded recess therein. This plate is located just beneath or is iush with the under side of but does not contact with the top 4t, a space being left between the inner edges of the top and the edges of the plate. An open triangular frame 8 is secured to said top.
Mounted upon a standard 9, secured to the bottom of the box, is an ordinary call-bell 10, and to said standard are pivotally connected two arms 12, formed with a single outwardlyprojecting arm 13, which extends through an aperture 14C in one of the sides of the box. The said arms 12 are provided with apertures near the ends which engage with a pin 15, se-
cured to said standard 9, by which theyl are pivotally connected therewith. Also pivoted to said pin is a plate 16, the outer end of which is formed with a slot 17. This end of the plate is connected with the arms 12 by means of a pin 18, which passes through ap,- ertures in said arms and plate. This pin also acts as a pivot for a swinging hammer 20. The numeral 21 designates a spring secured to the standard 9, and bearing against the under side of the plate 16.
The numeral 23 designates a bracket secured to the bottom of the box and provided with an aperture for the passage of a screw or other fastening device by which the box may be attached to a desk.
In using the device, the presiding odioer strikes the gong or vibrator with a gavel, which will cause an alarm to be sounded. It will be noticed that the gong is secured to the standard at one edge only, and also that it does not contact with the open top at any point, so that it can vibrate freely when struck by the gavel. The call-bell can be operated by depressing the arm 13 and suddenly releasing the same, when the swinging hammer will spring forward and strike the bell. The recoil will return the hammer to normal position. The triangular frame at the top `of the box acts as a sounding-board.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim isl. The combination with the box having openings in its sides, and the top having an opening therein, of the standard, the gong or vibrator secured at one edge thereto and flush with but not contacting with said top, substantially as described.
2. In agong mechanism the open sided box, the open cover, the triangular frame secured thereto, the standard and the gong or vibrator secured thereto at one edge, the bell therein, its standard, the pivoted arms attached thereto, the outwardly extending arms secured to the pivoted arms and projecting through a slot in the box, the pivoted plate connected with said pivoted arms, the swinging hammer and the spring, substantially as described.
