r J. IMMEL. COMBINED PLATE, PLATINUM, AND SHEE'I. HEATING FURNACE.
Patented Sept. 10,1895.
l/EMTOR ATTUHNEW J OHANNES IMMEL, OF GEISWEID, GERMANY.
COMBINED PLATE, PLATINUM, AND SHEET HEATING FURNACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,100, dated September 10, 1895. Application filed January 15, 1895. Serial No. 634,949. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHANNES IMMEL, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of Geisweid, near Siegen, WVestphalia, Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Plate, Platinum, and Sheet Heating Furnace, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to combined furnaces for heating plate, platinum, and steel, and has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, readily constructed and perfectly-operating device of this character capable of heating such variety of metals or forms of metal at the same time.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts whereby the above-mentioned and other desirable re sults are attained, and hereinafter more fully described.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section taken through the exact center of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is asection thereof upon the line 00 m.
In the practice of my invention I construct the furnace A with the usual grate a and hearth b, to which latter access is had by the longitudinally-aligning door 0 in the rear end of the furnace.
Projecting horizontally from the perpendicular wall B, immediately behind the grate a, at slight distance from the top of said wall, is a protective dome d, forming an auxiliary hearth, access to which is obtainable through the transverselyaligning doors 6 e in the sides of the furnace.
Beneath the hearth b is a chamber 0, formed by a horizontal partition or flooring D above the base of the furnace, which said chamber 0 communicates with the hearth-chamber by a rear passage 0'. The said partition D does not extend wholly to the forward end of the chamber 0, and thereby forms a passage 0 through which the chamber 0 communicates to the usual flue or chimney.
The operation of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. A fire is kindled upon the grate, preferably with the use of anthracite coal. The auxiliary hearth dis filled with plates, inserted through the doors 6 or e, and the hearth I) with sheets of iron.
The flames developed upon the grate a are carried over the wall B and strike the plates upon the hearth or dome d with the first and most intense heat, the same heating-gases serving to warm the sheets upon the usual hearth 19. Through the passage 0' the gases pass into the chamber 0 underneath the sill of the hearth and intensely heat the sheets thereon from beneath, finally escaping through the passage 0 to the chimney.
By the use of my invention not only is a double furnace for the stated purpose produced, but drossing is also completely prevented.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A furnace having a grate at the front, a per pendicular wall behind the same, a vertically central main hearth rearward of said wall, a parallel partition beneath said hearth at the rear to form a chamber, an auxiliary hearth or dome projecting horizontally from the perpendicular wall near the top and rearwardly to overlap the main hearth, a longitudinally aligning door at the rear of the furnace to communicate with the main hearth, transversely aligning doors in each side of the furnace communicating with the auxiliary hearth, a passage at the rear connecting the hearth chamber with the chamber beneath the same, whereby the gases enter the said lower chamber and heat the hearth-sill, and a passage leading from the front of said lower chamber to carry off said gases, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 11th day of August, 1894:-
JOI-IANNES IMMEL.
Witnesses:
FRITZ Sonnonnn, M. NAGEL.
