To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND CHAMPANE, of \Vhitefield, county of Coos, State of New I'Iampshiremave invented an Improvement in Nrenches, of which the following description,
in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like letters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of a novel wrench, my invention being particularly adapted for what is known as a carriage-wrench.
My improved wrench consists, essentially,
of two jaws, preferably socketed at their acting [5 ends to engage the nut or bolt-head, and the back of said sockets provided with a suitable main adjusting device, preferably a handle having a threaded shank extended through the jaws and fitted with ahandle nut at its end at the opposite side of the jaws. The jaws are also provided with a second auxiliary adjusting device in the form of a right and left handed screw, which in the preferred embodiment of my invention is also passed through both jaws beyond the main adjusting device opposite the acting ends of the jaws, suitable means being provided by which'to rotate the said auxiliary adjusting device.
My invention further comprehends provid- 0 ing the auxiliary adjusting device, between the two jaws and in line with the axis of the opening between the acting ends of the jaws, with a swivel-handle which may be held in one hand and from an axial bearing about 5 which the wrench and nut or bolt-head may be rotated by the other hand.
The drawing, in perspeotive,partially broken away, shows one form of wrench embodying my invention.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawing, A A are two preferably like jaws, socketed at a at their acting ends to engage the corners of a nut or bolt-head, and perforated just back of said sockets to receive 4 5 the shank b of a handle B, said shank at its end opposite the handleB being threaded to receive the handle 13', which when turned relatively to the handle B and its shank acts to move the jaws toward or permits them to be moved from each other.
In the preferred embodiment of myinvention the jaws A A are extended rearwardly beyond the handles B B, which, with the shank b, constitute one form of main adjust ing device, and at their inner ends are again perforated to receive the right and left threaded auxiliary adjusting device 0, herein shown as provided at one end with a thumb-piece c, by which it may be rotated in either direction. The right threads of the auxilary adjuster work in one of the jaws and the left threadsv in the other, so that rotation of the auxiliary adjuster will cause the rear ends of the jaws to be positively spread or closed toward each other.
Between the jaws A A, I have provided the auxiliary adjuster with a cross-pin d, upon the ends of which, at the opposite sides of the adjuster, are swiveled or loosely mounted the handles 01'.
The operation of the wrench is as follows, viz: The wrench-jaws are placed upon the nut or bolt-head and are screwed together by means of the main adjusting device, thereby obtaining an approximate adjustment or clamping of the jaws upon the nut or bolthead. This having been done, the operator by turning the auxiliary adjuster positively spreads the jaws at their rear ends and acting about the main adjuster as a fulcrum clamps the acting ends of the jaw tightly upon the nut or bolt-head, so that when the latter is removed it is held tightly in the jaws and may be replaced by the wrench without requiring the nut or bolt-head to be taken in the hands, which is a very desirable feature when the wrench is used in oiling carriages and the like. To remove the wrench from the nut, it is usually sufficient to turn the auxiliary adjuster in an opposite direction, it acting to open the jaws sufficiently to enable the wrench to be easily taken'from the nut or bolt-head. For approximate adjust operated to clamp the jaws, as described. Assunning the wrench to have been clamped upon the nut or bolt-head, the operator grasps one of the handles d, and holding the same as a pivot with the other hand rotates the wrench and nut or bolt-head by means of the main adjuster, the handle d thus forming a swivel-support at the outer end of the wrench to enable the latter to be whirled or rotated. By providing two of the handles, as shown, one of them may also be brought to the outer end of the wrench for use in this manner, and by reason of the auxiliary adjuster being right and left threaded, it matters not what may be the degree of separation of the ends of the wrench-jaws the pin d, upon which the swivelhandles are mounted, is always in line with the axis of the opening, being the acting ends of the jaws. It matters not what the size of the nut may be, the wrench may always be effectively clamped thereupon, and by the use of the combined main and auxiliary adjusters the jaws may be made to hold the nut after it is removed and until it is replaced.
My invention is not limited to the particular shape or construction herein shown, for it isevident that the same may be varied without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim- 1. A wrench containing two jaws, a main threaded adjusting device extended through said jaws and provided at its opposite ends and at the outer sides of the said jaws with handles, rotation of which effects adjustment of the said device, saidhandles also furnishing means for rotating the wrench, and a right and left threaded auxiliary adjusting device, substantially as described.
2. A wrench containing two jaws, a handle at the outer side of one of said jaws, and having a threaded shank extended through both jaws and receiving upon its threaded end outside the other jaw a second handle, said handles furnishing means by which to adjust the jaws through said device, and also furnishing means fr rotation of the wrench, a right and left threaded auxiliary device fitted in said jaws at that side of the main adjusting device opposite the acting ends of the jaws, and a radially extended operating handle for said auxiliary adjusting device and between the said jaws, substantially as described.
3. The combination with two jaws, and a main and a right and left threaded auxiliary adjusting device, of a swivel handle carried by the said auxiliary adjusting device between the said jaws, substantially as described.
4. The combination with two jaws, and a main and a right and left threaded auxiliary adjusting device carried thereby, of the oppositely arranged swivel handles applied to the said auxiliary adjusting device between the said jaws to operate substantially as described.
