Description

NITED STATES union.
SILAS M. BROOKS, OF BURLINGTON, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECTAND MESNE AS- SIGNMENTS, TO CHARLES A. I-IART AND PHELPS F. SMITH, OF CANTON, CONNECTICUT, AND WILLIAM E. SIMONDS.
G RAFTING=WAX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,941, dated september 10, 1895.
Application filed September 13, 1893.
to raxalso called storax-rosin, (commercial,) and tallow or an equivalent fat. The preferred proportions are styrax, one pound; rosin, four pounds, and tallow two pounds; but the proportions may be varied, as any 15 addition of styrax to the rosin and tallow will be found beneficial to the production of a grafting-wax.
The process of compounding these ingredients is as follows: Put the rosin, Well cov- 2o ered with Water, into a kettle over a fire and heat until the rosin is melted, stirring the resin meanwhile to prevent it from sticking Serial No. 4851405. (No specimens.)
to the kettle. When the rosin is melted, add the styrax and stir a little to well incorporate the styrax thoroughly with the rosin. Then add the tallow and stir to incorporate that. Now pour the mass into a tub of cold. water and allow it to cool. When cool, work it after the manner of working butter in butter-making to express the water, and the compound is finished. The compound is now plastic and so remains unless subjected to very cold temperature. The degree of plasticity is regulated by the amount of tallow used, the larger proportion of tallow giving the greater plasticity.
I claim as my improvement A grafting Wax consisting of a compound of styrax, resin and tallow substantially as described.
SILAS M. BROOKS. Witnesses:
CHARLES A. HART, JASPER H. BIDWELL.
