TOM-TOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,710, dated September 3, 1 895. Application filed (lune 6, 1895. Serial No. 551,824. (No modeL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ROBERT MEYER and WILLIAM C. FoULDs, citizens of the United States, residingin the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tom-Toms, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings. Our invention consists of an improvement in tom-toms or similar apparatus for use in dye houses, woolen-mills, bleacheries, 850., wherein it is desired to thoroughly saturate or moisten in a suitable liquor hosiery or other goods, and whereby the action of the apparatus is rendered more effective than heretofore, means being provided for more effectually and thoroughly treating said goods than has heretofore been possible in prior apparatus.
F g/ t further consists of novel details of con struction, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
Figu re 1 represents a vertical sectional View of a tom-tom and its adjuncts embodying our invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section on line x 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Referring to the drawings,A designates a tom-tom, the same consisting of a tub, vat, or similar receptacle having a base B, upon which rests the false bottom 0, said base resting upon the rollers E, which are suitably journaled in the bed or foundation D, so that said tub or vat A can rotate freely thereon.
F designates a pinion which is adapted to be rotated in any suitable manner and to mesh with the rack G, whereby said receptacle A can be rotated when desired.
H designates a shaft which is mounted upon suitable bearings (not shown) and which has radiating therefrom at proper intervals the fingers or arms J, said shaft and arms formin g a wiper, a suitable portion of said arms being adapted to work inthe slots L ofthe upright bars M, which are capable of an up-anddown movement between suitable supports or guides N, arranged above and below the shaft I-l, said fingers being'adapted to contact with the rollers K, which are journaled in the upper portion of said slots L.
P designates suitable yokes which are attached to the lower extremities of said upright bars M, in which are journaled the rollers Q, said rollers being shown in the present instance as being three in number, although it is evident that one solid roller may be employed, if desired.
The operation is as follows: The liquor or dye having been placed in the Vat or tub A and the goods having been immersed therein, said tub is caused to'rotate by means of the pinion F, and by the rotation of the shaft H the arms J will contact with the rollers in the slotted bars M, thus causing said bars to alternately rise and fall as said vat rotates, whereupon it will be evident that every portion of the goods will be brought into contact at difierent times with the rollers, and thus saturated and thoroughly impregnated with the liquor or dye, it being noted that the weight of said rollers and bar will cause the liquor to penetrate every portion of the goods and that better results Will be obtained by the substitution of rollers for the solid block or plunger heretofore employed, since the tub A is continually revolving, while the bars M are momentarily stationary, during the operation, the goods, however, being continually rotated in the tub, and thus caused to pass between the rollers Q and the bottom 0, said rollers Q thus continually rotating serving to press or force the liquor into or out of every portion of the goods to'be treated without roughening the same by friction, as is the case when a non-rotating solid block or plunger is employed, as has heretofore been the practice. It will of course be evident that the number of the bars M may be increased or diminished and that the number of the rollers Q may also be varied according to requirements, and it will furthermore be apparent that said rollers Q instead of being of uniform diameter may be conical, convex, or concave, as maybe expedient for treating different kinds of goods, andthat other changes may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention.
Having thus described our invention, what weclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, a tub or vat, a bar suspended and guided therein and adapted to be reciprocated, said bar having jonrnaled in the lower portion thereof a suitable roller, in combination with means for rotating said vat, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, a suitable va t or receptacle, a false bottom therefor, means for rotating said vat, upright bars having rollers journaled in the lower portion thereof, means for supporting and guiding said bars, in combination with suitable means for imparting reciprocating movement to the same, substantially as described.
3. A foundation With rollers journaled therein, a vat supported on said rollers, slotted bars having rollers Within said vat, guides for said
