Description

(No Model.)
P. K. MANNES. -PADDLE.
No. 545,706. Patented Sept. 3, 1895.
WITNESSES: /NVENT0/-7 A TTOHNEYS.
NITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
PEDER K. MANNES, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
PADDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,706, dated September 3, 1895.
Application filed June 12, 1895- Serial No. 552,549. (No model.)
To a. whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PEDER K. MANNES, of St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paddles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a paddle which is particularly adapted for use by hnntsmen in skiffs and canoes. When hunting in boats of this class, it is desirable that one man be able to manipulate the boat as well as his gun, and when game is fired at it will be necessary to laydown the paddles or oars, so that the gun may be used, and afterward, when the chase for the game begins, to take up the paddles for moving the boat.
The object of my invention is to make a paddle in which it will be unnecessary to' lay it down during the firing of the gun, and which will yet be in position when the operator has the gun raised to effect its firing. By these means the boat may be quickly advanced toward the game, which, being sometimes simply wounded, takes flight in or over the water and necessitates a chase, all of which will be understood.
The invention will be hereinafter described, and the features of novelty pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar-characters of'reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a skiff or canoe, showing a portion of a man therein and showing one of my improved paddles in operative arrangement; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the paddle.
The paddle comprises an integral shank or body portion having a straight part a, bent at its end to form a second straight portion 12, said straight portion being extended almost at right angles to the section a and integral therewith. Formed at the end of the section b and projecting perpendicularly therefrom is a handle piece 0, which is adapted to be grasped by the operator, as shown in Fig. 1.
6 indicates a ring or loop, which is pivotally connected to the bend between the sections at and b, as illustrated in the drawings,
and which is adapted to have the forearm of the operator passed through it, all of which may be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1.
f indicates the blade of the paddle, which is of the usual construction and which is formed integral with the lower end of the section a. The paddle f is curved or bent slightly away from the side of the section from which the section 1) projects, to the end that it may engage the water more directly, although this arrangement is not absolutely essential, as will be obvious.
The use of my invention will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1, and there it will be seen that each arm of the operator may be provided with one of the paddles and that they may be used as illustrated in the drawings. It is explained in connection with the use of my invention that by simply releasing the handle-sections c the hands of the operator will be free for use for other purposes, and he may thereby be enabled to manipulate a gun in hunting. After he has fired a shot it Will be very easy to catch hold of the handles 0 a second time and begin rowing or paddling the boat toward the game. This rowing or paddling may be done by these means a great deal quicker than by the usual means.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A paddle having a bent shank or body portion, a hand grasp projecting perpendicularly from the end of the shank or body, and a ring or loop pivotally mounted at the bend in the shank or body, substantially as described.
2. A paddle having a hand grasp projected from the body or shank thereof, and having a ring or loop capable of receiving the arm of the user, substantially as described.
3. A paddle having a bent shank or body portion provided with means for securing the inner arm alongside of and to the arm of the user, substantially as described.
