To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, HARVEY L. FISHER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and use ful Printing-Press, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple, cheap, durable, and easily-operated printing-press of the class known as cylinder presses,adapted to print direct frointhe form, capable of printing a comparatively large number of copies in a given time, and be operated either by hand or power.
My object is further to provide mechanism for operating the impression member or cylgreatest at the center of the type-bed and will gradually decrease toward each end,- so that said impression member may be moved rapidly and not injure the machine by abrupt starting and stopping at the ends, to provide simple and easily-operated means for throwing the operating mechanism in and out of gear, and to provide simple, strong, and durable means for automatically elevating the impression member above the form on its backward movement and for adjusting the pressure of the impression member on .the form.
My invention consists in certain details in the mechanism for imparting motion to the lazy-tongs levers, the mechanism for throwing the machine in or out of gear, the mechanism for automatically elevating the impression member on its-backward or return movement and for adjusting the pressure of the impression member on the form, and in certain other features hereinafter 'set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichv Figure 1 is a perspective view of the com- Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Referring to the accompanying drawings, the reference-letter A is used to indicate the supporting-legs of-the press, A the type-bed, A the parallel tracks at the sides of the bed and a slight distance above the bed, and A the feeding-platform at one end of'the frame above the tracks. These parts are preferably made from cast metal and of the usual shape and size.

It will now be obvious that when the sliding bar H is held inwardly by its operating spring, upon each revolution of the gearwheel the inclined surface H on its end will pass over the pawl D and thus allow the gear-wheel to rotate independently of the segment, and when said sliding bar is held outwardly the cam-surface 1-1 will engage the pawl F and force it outwardly and permit the pawl D to raise, and, when turned to engage the downward projection K and thus rotate said segment K and arm K The downwardly-projecting segment K is so positioned relative to the arm K that when the device is thrown out of gear the arm K will stop just before it reaches the limit of its rearward stroke, so that as it is again started the said arm will first be drawn rearwardly a slight distance and then backwardly. By this arrangement theimpression member will be started by first moving a slight distance rearwardly and giving the paper -clutching devices thereon a chance to engage a paper from the feeding-platform.
M indicates a series of lazy-ton gs levers, one end of which is pivotally connected-with a yoke M that has the axle M of the impression member or cylinder M mounted therein, and the two meeting levers at the opposite end are pivoted to a suitable stationary part of the frame and are provided with segmental gear-wheels M in mesh with each other. To firmly hold said cylinder in a plane at right angles to the tracks, I have provided the cables M wound upon the ends of the cylinder two complete turns, secured thereto at the central portion of the cables, and stretched tight and secured at the ends of the tracks in an ordinary manner.
N indicates a link pivotally connected with the end of the crank and with one side of the lazy-tongs levers in such a manner that the levers will be at one or the other of the limits of their movement when the said arm and link are in alignment. By this arrangement the impression-cylinder will be moved more rapidly when at the center of its movement and will slow up gradually toward each end. On the top surface of each of the tracks A is a flat metal bar P, secured thereto only at its ends and capable of being slightly raised at the central portion. P indicates a block mounted in the frame beneath each of said bars and adapted to move vertically to force said bar upwardly.
P indicates two rock-shafts mounted in suitable bearings in the machine-frame beneath the type-bed and each provided with downwardly-projecting arms P, connected by rods P so that they will move in unison, and R indicates disks on their ends having notches R therein and the blocks R resting in said notches and engaging the lower ends of the blocks P so that a movement of the rock-shafts P will elevate the blocks P R indicates a lever secured to one end of the shaft P", on which the levers V are pivoted, whereby the track may be raised by hand. I have provided means for elevating said tracks automatically upon each return movement of the cylinder, so that the impression-cloth will not engage the type, as follows: T indicates a vertical shaft rotatably mounted in suitable bearingsin'the machine-frame and having an arm T on its top end carrying a roller T adapted to be engaged by the segment K, and thus rock the shaft T. On the lower end of this shaft T is an arm V, and motion is imparted from this arm to one of the arms P by means of the rod V lever V and rod V These parts are so arranged that the segment K engages with the roller T only upon the return movement of the cylinder, and that when the arm T is being held outwardly by said segment the track will be elevated at its central portion. To provide means for adjusting the downward pressure of the impression-cylinder on the type, I have provided the springs 00, placed in bores in the frame, to engage the under surface of the blocks P and the set-screws Y in the same bores to engage the lower ends of said springs.
Having thus described in turn the constructionand operation of each feature of the invention, it is believed that their operation as a complete machine will be readily understood. Any common inking device may be used, and
the papers are placed upon the feeding-platform, engaged by suitable devices on the impression-cylinder, and carried thereby over the type-bed, where the impression is made, and then discharged in the ordinary manner at the opposite end of the tracks.
I claim as my invention-- 1. An improved printing press comprising a suitable frame, a type bed thereon, tracks at the side of the bed, an impression member mounted on said tracks, a yoke connected with the axle of the impression member, a series of lazy tongs levers pivotally connected withthe said yoke at one end and with a stationary support at the other, the latter ends having segmental gears on their meeting edges in mesh with each other, a vertical shaft mounted in the machine frame, an arm loosely mounted on said shaft to rotate in a horizontal plane, a link connected with said arm and with one of the lazy tongs levers so that when the levers are at either limit of their movement the said arm and link will be in alignment and means for rotating said arm, for the purposes stated.
2. An improved printing press comprising a suitable frame, a type bed thereon, tracks at the side of thebed, an impression member mounted on said tracks, a yoke connected with the axle of the impression member a series of lazy tongs levers pivotally connected with the said yoke at one end and with a stationary support at the other, the latter ends having segmental gears on their meeting edges in mesh with each other, a vertical shaft mounted in the machine frame, an arm loosely mounted on said shaft to rotate in a horizontal plane, a link connected with said arm and with one of the lazy tongs levers, so that when the levers are at either limit of their move ment the said arm and link will be in alignment, a gear wheel loosely mounted on said shaft, spring actuated pawls connected with said gear wheel to engage said arm, and means for holding said pawls either in or out of engagement with the arm,for the purposes stated.
3. An improved printing press comprising a suitable frame, a type bed thereon, tracks atthe side of the bed, an impression cylinder mounted on said tracks, cables wound upon the ends of the impression cylinder and secured at the ends of the tracks, a yoke connected with the axle of the impression cylinder, a series of lazy tongs levers pivotally connected with the said yoke at one end and with a stationary support at the other, the latter ends having segmental gears on their meeting edges in mesh with each other, a stub axle fixed in the machine frame in a vertical position, a gear wheel loosely mounted thereon, the spring actuated pawls on said gear wheel as shown, a bar having the downward projection on its under side with an inclined face and cam surface as shown, to engage said pawls, an arm on said axle having a segmental down ward projection, a link pivoted to the outer end of said arm and to the lazy tongs levers so that said link and arm will be in alignment when said levers are at the limits of their stroke, and means for operating said gear wheel, for the purposes stated.
4. In an improved printing press the combination with a suitable frame, a type bed thereon, and tracks projecting above the sides of the type bed, of a block in the central portion of each track, a metal bar on each track secured thereto at its ends only, with its censhafts mounted in suitable bearings beneath the bed, one or more arms on each shaft projecting downwardly, rods pivotally connecting the arms, disks on the ends of said rock shafts, blocks placed in notches in the disk and engaging the under edge of the aforesaid blocks, and means for imparting motion to one of said rock shafts, for the purposes stated.
6. In an improved printing press, the combination with a suitable frame, a type bed thereon, and tracks projecting above the sides of the type bed, of a block in the central portion of each track, a metal bar on each track secured thereto at its ends only, with its central portion resting on said block, and means for elevating said blocks, one or more coil springs placed in suitable vertical bores in the machine frame, with their upper endsimpinging said blocks and set screws passed upwardly through said bores and in engagement with the lower ends of said springs, for the purposes stated.
7. An improved printing press, comprising a suitable frame, a type bed thereon, tracks at the side of the bed, an impression cylinder mounted on said tracks, a yoke connected edges in mesh with each other, a stub axle fixed in the machine frame in a vertical posi-- tion, a gear wheel loosely mounted thereon, the spring actuated pawls on said gear wheel as shown, a bar having the downward projection on its under side with an inclined face and cam surface as shown, to engage said pawls, an arm on said axle having a segmental downward projection and a segment projecting horizontally in an opposite direction fromsaid arm, a link pivoted to the outer end of said arm and to the lazy tongs levers so that said link and arm will be in alignment when said levers are at the limits of their stroke, and means for operating said gear wheel, fiat metal bars on top of said tracks secured only at their ends, blocks under the central portions of said bars, two rock shafts mounted beneath the type bed, means for connecting them, devices fixed to theirends to engage and elevate said blocks when the shafts are rocked, a vertical shaft in the maarm on its top adapted to be engaged by said horizontally projecting segment and means for connecting said shaft and the said rock shafts, for thepurposes stated.
8. An improved printing press, comprising a suitable frame, a type bed thereon, tracks at the side of the bed, an impression cylinder mounted on said tracks, a yoke connected with the axle of the impression cylinder, a series of lazy tongs levers pivotally connected with the said yoke at one end and with a stationary support at the other, the latter ends having segmental gears on their meeting edges in mesh with each other, a stub axle fixed in the machine frame in a vertical position, a gear wheel loosely mounted thereon, the spring actuated pawls on said gear wheel as shown, a bar having the downward projection on its under side with an inclined face and cam surface as shown, to engage said pawls, an arm on said axle having a segmental downward projection and a segment projecting horizontally in an opposite direction from said arm, a link pivoted to the outer end of said arm and to the lazy tongs levers so that and elevate said blocks when the shafts are rocked, coil springs placed in suitable vertical bores in the tracks to impinge the under sides of said blocks, and set screws in said.
