CATCH-BASIN COVER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,343, dated August 27, 1895.

To all whom it 11mg concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE GARDINER CAMPBELL, acitizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gatcl1-Basin Covers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in catclrbasin covers. It is well known that in many streets the gutters are located below the level of the street-pavement, and it'is desirable that near the catch-basin the gutter should be so located in order to facilitate the flow of water into it, Thisis especially true where the catch-basin is located at the street-corner, as a shallow gutter will easily fill up and clog underneath the planking of the cross-walk. In order to use the ordinary forms of catchbasin covers, it is necessary to lower the street around the catch-basin to the level of the gutter, making a deep hollow, which is dangerous to passing vehicles, and especially so, owing to the vtendency to hug the corner in turning from one street to the other. For this reason the gutters are seldom constructed of a desirable depth, and the street is often overflowed during flooded periods.

The object of my invention is, therefore, to provide a catch-basin cover adapted to admit water from deep gutters as well as from the ordinary street-level, and which will permit the gutters to be of any desirable depth without endangering street traliic,

My invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure I is a plan view showing my invention in place at a street-corner. Fig. II is a front elevation of the same, showing the street facing and the relative position of the grates. Fig. III is a vertical section drawn on the line it of Fig. I. Fig. IV is an oblique perspective of my invention in place with a portion of the gutter side broken away to show the location of the gutter grate-bars.

My invention is cast integrally; The baseplate A is of the usual construction, being circular, with downward-projecting flanges B and G, between which the brickwork is adapted to fit and having a large opening in the center of the plate leading to the interior of the basin. This opening is covered by a raised body D, the rear part E of which is designed to be of the same height as the sidewalk. This part is box-like in its construction, and the catch-basin is so located as to bring it within the curbing, the sides F and G being coincident with the curb-line. The top H is provided with the usual covered manhole I, leading to the interior of the basin.

The forward part J of the body D is adapted to support a system of grates covering that portion of the opening in the base-plate which is outside of the curb-line. A top grate K, dovetail in shape, slants downward across the gutter-corner to the street-pavement from the side L of the part E, the lower and wide portion being supported by a bent or curved facing M, which rises from the street side of the opening in the base-plate and against which the earth and pavement of the street is supported. From the sides of the part J, where it crosses the gutter, a series of grate-bars N extend laterally along the run of the gutter to the outer rim of the baseplate A, and the facing M is continued along the line of the bars N in the form of a tapering flange 0, the plane of which is coincident with that of the outer gutter side. The bars N and flange 0 are designed to be covered by the planking of the cross-walk, the ends of which are adapted to the sides of the body D and rest upon the flange R. Should it be desired to extend the gutter-pavement upon the base-plate A, the gutter grate-bars N may be terminated over theinner rim of the baseplate and supported bya raised flange rising vertically from said base-plate to form a facing or support for the gutter-pavement.

Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A catch basin cover, consisting of the combination of an open base plate, a raised portion covering a part of the opening in said base plate, and adapted to occupy the space above the opening within the curb line, a facing opposite said raised portion, adapted to support the earth and pavement of the street at a. higher level than that of the gutter,

grating extending from the top of said raised portion to the top of said facing, and grated sides extending downward and laterally along the gutter line, with the lower end or edge thereof supported upon the base plate, substantially as described.

2. A catch basin cover, adapted to be located at a street corner, consisting of the combination of an open base plate, a raised portion covering part of the opening in said base plate, and adapted to occupy the space above the opening within the curb line, an angular or curved facing opposite said raised portion, adapted to support the earth and pavement of the street between the cross walks at a higher level than that of the gutter, inclined grate bars extending from the top of the raised portion to the top of said facing, and widening laterally to completely fill the space between the cross walks over said opening, together with gutter grate bars extending laterally from the sides of the raised portion along the run of the gutter, with the lower ends of said bars supported upon the base plate, substantially, as described.

3. A catch basin cover, consisting of the combination of an open base plate, a raised portion covering a part of the opening in said base plate, and adapted to occupy the space above the opening within the curb line, a facing opposite said raised portion, adapted to support the earth and pavement of the street at a higher level than that of the gutter, grating extending from the top of said raised por tion to the top of said facing, grated sides extending downward and along the gutter line to the base plate, and a horizontal flange R extending along the gutter sides of said cover, and above the grating, adapted to support the planking or material of the cross walk, substantially, as described.

4. A catch basin cover, consisting of the combination of a horizontal open base plate of usual form, a flat topped raised portion adapted to cover that portion of the opening in the base plate within the curb line and a slanting topped portion adapted to cover the remainder of said opening and provided with one or more openings adapted to admit water from the level of the street and lateral gutter openings adapted to admit water from a lower level, substantially as described.

5. A catch basin cover, consisting of the combination of an open base plate, a raised portion covering part of the opening in said base plate and adapted to occupy the space within the curb line, a facing, of Varying height, opposite said raised portion, said facing being highest at its central portion, adapted to support the earth and pavement of the street at a higher level than that of the gutter, and inclined grating or grate bars covering the space between said facing and the raised portion within the curb line, substantially, as described.
