IMPROVEMENT IN HERNIAL TRUSSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,521, dated May 8, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLPII O. FoIisBERG, oi' Gincin nati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Pad for I-Iernia-I'russes5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a i'ull, clear, and cxactdescription ot'm y invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
This invention relates` to an arrangement and construction of the pad for the cure or aileviation of inguinal hernia, which insures greater effectiveness in supporting and pressing back the protruding mass and in securing the reunion or' the severed parts.
Figure l is a perspective view of a truss emf bodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the pad.
I make of the customary or any improved form the following parts, to wit, the mainspring A, back-pad B, strap C, button D, and
i arms E E', for attachmentot' my hernia pad,
which pad I construct as follows: Attached to the arms E E is an oval back, F, having a perforated marginal depression or channel, j', for the reception and attachment oi' a cushion, which constitutes my annular or exterior pad, G. Hinged to the back F is my central pad, H, having the form of one-half an egg, the larger part downward. Tapped within the back F is a set-screw, I, which, bearing against the rear side of the pad H, enables the large end to be set more out or in, as the nature of each particular case may require. Thus when the hernia is severe and protuberant the butt or large end of the pad H is set outward or f toward the personof the wearer, so as to support and press backward the protrusion, which having been effected, the screw may be gradually relaxed and the pad H restored to a more vertical position.
B y forming the lower end ofthe pad H larger and more prominent than the upper part a more griping action is obtained upon the upper part of the inguinal canal, acting to close the oriiice and to restore and retain the bowels to the natural cavity of the abdomen. At the same time the irritation acts to enlarge and strengthen the confining-muscles..
I have selected as the preferred type of my invention a form which numerous practical tests have proved to be effective, but do not desire to restrict the invention to the i precise construction represented so long as the essential objects of an upward and inward pressure are secured by means substantially equivalent. For example, the central pad, H, may approximate a hemispheroidal form, and a spring may be employed to holdthe pad H snugly against the screw.
Iclaim herein as new and of my invention- The hinged pad H, having a positive and nou-elastic adjustment, substantially as described.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
A. O. FORSBERG.
