P. S. MGKITTRIOK & W. WILKSON. COMBINED SPICE HOLDER, GRINDER, NAIL FULLER, AND GAS WRENCH.
No. 545,090. Patented Aug. 27,1895.
FREDRIOK SARTIN MGKITTRIGK AND WILLIAM WILKSON, OF JOHANNES- BURG, SOUTH AFRICAN REPUBLIC.
COMBlNED SPICE HOLDER, GRINDER, NAIL-FULLER, AND GAS-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,090, dated August 27, 1895.
' Application filed January 17, 1895. Serial No. 55351286. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FREDRIOK SARTIN' MCKITTRICK, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and WILLIAM WILKSON, a citizen of the United States, residents of Johannesburg, South African Republic, have invented a certain new and useful Combined Spice Holder and Grinder, Nail-Puller, and Gas-Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention consists of a tool or implement for domestic use wherewith spicessuch as nutmegs, ginger, cloves, &c.may be readily ground to a fine powder in such quantity as the user may desire, and by detaching the grinding apparatus the tool may be used for pulling small nails, as a gas fittings wrench, and for sundry other domestic purposes. I I In the accompaying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the grinding attachment removed.
Referring to the drawings, which form a part of this specification, A A are a pair of grips or jaws passing through two rectilinear slots in the cover of the cylinder 0 and connected at their lower ends to a circular disk or piston B by two pins or a. The disk or piston is allowed to work freely in the cylinder or shell 0 and is connected to the wooden handle D by means of the shank E, which passes through the helical spring F and the handle D and is fixed by the milled nut b, which also serves to adjust the pressure of the spring F. The jaws are made to open by I pushing up the handle D, the pressure of the spring Fcausing them to effect a firm grip upon anything that may be placed between them immediately after the pressure on the handle is removed. a
G is a small steel disk, with sawteeth grooves cut in the face of it.
H is asmall handle connected with the disk by the spindle I, which works in a bush in the top of the slide-bar J, which is attached to the cylinder 0 by means of the two brackets K K, screwed or otherwise fixed to the side.
L is a small helical spring which serves to maintain the pressure of the grinder or cutter Gr up against the material in the jaws which is being operated upon.
The whole of the tool, with the exception of the cutter, maybe made of malleable castiron, brass, or other suitable material; and the disk may be made in other suitable form than the one above described. It may be made of case-hardened cast-iron or steel, or it may be made of a suitable thin metal with holes punched in it, the under rough surface caused by the punctures serving to grind the spices.
It must, however, be understood that we do therein with means for operating them, and
the detachable grinder or cutter, substantially as described.
2. In combination the cylinder, the spring pressed jaws supported therein, the handle for operating them, the detachable slide bar and the grinder carried thereby, substantially as described.
3. In combination the cylinder, the disk sliding therein carrying pivoted jaws, the shank, the sliding handle connected therewith, the spring, and the detachable grinder held in proximity to said jaws, substantially as described.
4. In combination, the cylinder provided with brackets, the jaws with means for operating them, the removable bar slidingin said brackets with means for looking it therein, and the grinder carried by said bar, substantially as described.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two witnesses.
FREDRICK SARTIN MGKITTRIGII. WILLIAM WILKSON.
Witnesses: D. L. WOOLF, J. M. MoLLER, RICHARD Ross MUNRO, FREDRIOK JOHN MdLLER.
