Description

W. CAV EN.
Tea Kettle.
Nb. 54,502. Patented May 8, 1866.
- n. FHERS. Hi wum n m, Wn hlngtun. n. c.
NITED STATES WILLIAM (JAVEN, O F CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IlVI PROVEM ENT' lN TEA-KETTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,502, dated May 8, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beitknown that I, WILLIAM CAVEN, of Cin-. cinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Tea-Kettles; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement on the common cast tea-kettle, and consists in a simple, cheap, and effective device for pivoting the lid to the kettle.
Figure 1 represents the body, lid, and bail detached. Fig. 2 is an axial section of the same.
The body A and front lug, B, are cast in one piece iu-the' usual way. At the place of the rear lug the body is pierced by a circular openingvor socket, 0,11aving two notches, c 0.
The lid D has a flange, E, traversed by a circular opening, 6.-
The lug F has a round shank, G, having wings g g, which winged shank is adapted to be inserted in the opening 0 and turned a quarter round, so as for its wings g g to engage under the top of the kettle-body.
The rear lug, F, has also a round neck, H, adapted to fit and occupy the round hole 6 in the lid. The lid being laid in its place, the shank of the rear lug is inserted through the openings 6 and O c c in the lid and body, respectively, and turned a quarter round. The
respective ends of the bail I are then engaged in the front and in the rear lug and locked, and the work is done, the bail acting to hold the lug F G g g H in place.
It will be seen that the parts of myimproved lug and body can be cast in two simple and easily-molded pieces, which will require no further finishing than what is given to castings generally-namely, to clear off the particles of sand and slag which adhere to the surface of the metal.
In shipping the four simple pieces which compose my kettle may be packed separately and in a very compact form, and should any part be broken it can in a few seconds he re placed and the kettle be as good as new.
I do not claim, broadly, pivoting the cover to a tea-kettle, as this has before been done in various ways.
I claim herein as new and of my invention V In thedescribed combination with the socket O 0 c and flanged and perforated lid D E e, the winged rearlug, F G g g H, adapted to be secured in place by the ordinary bail in the manner set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
