Be it known that I, WALTER LYON SINTON, of the city of Victoria, in the Province of British Columbia and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Map or Chart Stands, of which the following is a specification. I

The object of the invention is to provide map or chart stand which may be readily taken apart and put into a portable condition, and by means of which the map or chart may be unrolled and hoisted from a springroller located near the base of the stand so as to render the stand peculiarly stable by keeping the weight as low as possible when the map is rolled or only partially unrolled, and which displays in the first instance the upper portion of the map or chart instead of the lower portion, as is usually the case; and

itconsists, essentially, of a folding standard provided with jaws at its lower end adapted to engage with and be secured to separable base-pieces, a transverse holderlocated on and removably secured to the lower part of the hinged standard, a spring-roller suitably journaled on said holder for carrying the map or chart, a jamb pulley attached to the top of the standard,.and means for hoisting the map or chart from the spring-roller toward the top of the standard, as hereinafter more particularly described and definitely claimed.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the chartstand with the chart rolled up. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail of the standard detached and folded. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail of the holder whichcarries the spring-roller detached from the standard and showing the rear side of the holder. Fig. at is a perspective view of the separable base-pieces.

Like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the various figures.

In Fig. 1, A A are separable base-pieces having a notch M formed in the bottom of the base-piece A and a notch L formed in the top of the base-piece A. When these pieces are placed together, the sides of the notch M engage with the lower portion of the basepiece A and the sides of-the notch L with the upper part of the base-piece A. They are shown fitted together in Fig. 1.

with the bottom of the standard, so as to enable it to be moved without becoming detached from the base-pieces.

B is a standard, which is preferably scarfjointed at b and hinged at b. The upper and lower portions of this standard 13 are providedrespectively with a pivoted hook I and eye J, (shown in Fig. 2,) in order to keep the scarf-joint I) closed and the hinged standard B in an upright position when unfolded and in use. V Although this is the preferable way of connecting the upper part of the standard with the lower portion thereof, instead of being hinged these portions may be detachable and the scarf-joint may be held together by a sleeve slid over it, or the parts may be connected by means of a mortise and tenon, or in any other way which renders them readily detachable or capable of being folded when the stand is not set up.

' C is a transverse holder fitted into a notch 0', formed on the lower part of the standard B (see Fig. 2) and held in place by means of the thumb-screw d, which enters into the threaded hole d on the back of the transverse holder C, as shown'inFig 3. Although this is the preferable way of connection with the standard, it may be otherwise connected so as to be readily detachable when the stand is taken apart for the purpose of being carried.

D (see Fig. 1) is the chart or map which is rolled on the spring-roller E. This springroller is of ordinary construction, and isjournaled in the bearings 8, attached to the trans verse holder 0.

S is a slat for holding the top of the chart,

and is provided with a ringf, and G is a string or halyard having at one end a hook g, which is designed to engage with the ringf. This halyard G passes through the jamb-pulley H at the top of the standard when it is set up for use, so that by pulling on the free end of the halyard G the map or chart is unrolled from the spring-roller E and the upper part thereof is first displayed. Instead of the j amb-pulley H there may be only an ordinary pulley, and the free end of the halyard G may be secured to a cleat on the lower part of the standard Bin the usual manner.

The location of the roller on the holder near the base of the standard keeps the weight lower down when the map or chart is rolled or only partially unrolled, and thus renders the stand much more stable than the ordinary kind of stand in which the holder is placed near the top of the standard and the map or chart is drawn downward from above in order to display it. The folding standard B is detachably connected with the separable base pieces A A by means of the jaws K K, which are formed on the end of the standard. (See Fig. 2.) In Fig. 1 these jaws are shown in place engaged respectively with the basepieces, and the hook'a, on the base piece A is hooked to an eyelet formed on the lower part of the standard.

By the foregoing construction it will be seen that I have provided a stand which is readily detachable and capable of being packed intoa small space when it is necessary to move the same to any distance. The location of the rolled map near the base of the standard and the raising of it from below toward the top of the standard renders my stand when in use peculiarly stable, as well as capable of displaying the upper portion of the map or chart, in the first instance, instead of the lower portion, as is usually the case.

WVhat I claim as my invention is 1. In a map or chart stand, separable base pieces A A notched at L and M respectively, the folding standard B having jaws K K fitting over the notched pieces A A, and a hook directly connecting the lower separable piece to said standard, whereby all of said pieces are securely fastened together and may be easily taken to pieces, in combination with a spring actuated map holder secured to said standard B, a map held thereon, and a halyard and jamb-pulley for adjusting and holding said map in any desired place, substantially as described.

' In a map or chartstand, the combination of the separable base pieces A A having notches L and M, the folding standard B having jaws K K fitting over said notched pieces A A, and provided with a hook directly connecting one of said base pieces with said standard, the said standard being scarf-jointed at b, and having the look I and pivoted eye J for holding the same in an unfolded position, a map or chart holder 0 being secured to said standard, a map supported thereby, and a notched at c, and means for holding the standard erect when unfolded and in use; the transverse holder 0; threaded hole at; and thumb screw d; substantially as described and for the purpose specified.

4. In a map or chart stand, the combination 7 of the separable base pieces A A notched at L and M respectively; the folding standard B notched at c, and means for securing the standard to the separable base pieces and for holding it erect when unfolded and in use; the transverse holder 0, located near the base of the standard, and means for detachably securing the same to the standard; the spring roller E, and bearings e, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.

5. In a map or chart stand,the combination of the separable base-pieces A A, notched at L and M respectively; the folding standard B, notched at c; and means for securing the standard to the base-pieces and for holding it erect when unfolded and in use; the transverse holder 0, and means for detachably securing the same to the standard near its base; the spring roller E, and bearings e; the mounted chartD; halyard G; and jamb pulley H, substantially as described and for the pur-' pose specified. I

In a map or chart stand, the combination of the separable base-pieces A A, notched at L and M respectively; the hook a; the folding standard B, notched at c, and scarf jointed at b; the hinge b; the hook I; the pivoted eye J; the jaws K K; the transverse holder 0, located near the base of the standard; the threaded hole d and thumb screw d; the spring roller E, and bearings e; the chart D, and slat S, provided with ring f; the halyard G; hook g; and tlie'jamb pulley I'I, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
