CLIP KING-BOLT FOR VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LcttersPatent N0. 544,7 10, dated August 20, 1895.

To all whom itmay concern:
Be it known thatI, DARIUS 'WILCOX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mechan-' icsburg, in the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clip King- Bolts for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in certain attachments to be used in connection with a fifth-wheel for vehicles; and it consists in the novel construction of a clip which is secured to the axle and a king-bolt depending from the head-block plate, all of which will be hereinafter fully described.
The object of the invention is to improve the'construction of devices of this character and give the appearance or style of a wheel:
provided with a clip king-bolt when viewed from the front and yet dispense altogether with the use of such clip-bolt.
A further object is to increase the strength and durability of the device as compared with the old style of clip king-bolt.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals and letters indicate corresponding parts in the diiferent views, Figure 1 is a'perspective view of a fifth-wheel with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the clip detached from the axle. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the head block, plate-lug, and king-bolt, and also showing the transverse bolt which secures the king-bolt.
1 is the head-block, which may be of any usual or desired form.
2 is the head-block plate. It has the general outline of the under side of the headblock and it is secured to the head-block by screws or bolts or in any other suitable way.
At or about the center of the plate 2 is a lug 3, which is formed as a part of or properly secured to the plate 2, and it carries the kingbolt 4, which depends therefrom. A bolt 5 is passed through the head-block transversely and holds the king-bolt 4. securely and prevents rattling.
On each side of the center I have shown two laterally-projecting lugs, which are secured to I the under sides of the reaches 6 6, two being used inthe present instance, although the device may'as well be used with a single reach, as will be explained later on. Exterior to the last-mentioned lugs are other lugs 7 7, projecting on each side of the head-block, and these lugs are used to secure the springs of the vehicle by means of the customary bolts and nuts, although they may be dispensed with and the springs be secured in any other known way. The wheel 8 is secured at its ends to the under side of the head-block at each end thereof and at or near the center, on top of the reach or reaches, or may be secured underneath the reaches, if desired.

10 is the clip attachment, which consists of two members 10 10". The member l0 comprises a clip which is bent to conform to and extend over the front of the axle and is provided with a screw-threaded lower end. At the top and at the rear of the axle the clip is enlarged and has a central hole for the kingbolt'4. It also has two depending rods or legs 11, which maybe formed as a part of the memberlO or be made separately and inserted through holes in the head. The device l0 as thus constructed straddles the center of the axle when in place. The top of the member 10, immediately adjacent to the top and rear of the axle, may be made with rounded or squared shoulders at the point marked X, so as to adapt itto an axle which is rounded or squared in the rear on top. In other words, the shoulders would be made to conform to the shape of the rear of the axle on which the attachment is to be used.
The member 10 is the saddle or clip-plate, and it is provided with holes or apertures for the three legs of the member 10*. It is made widest in the rear, has a hole or aperture for the king-bolt 4 and one hole for each of the legs of the member 10 and these legs are secured thereto by nuts 12. The member 1O has a recessed or reduced central portion which forms a seatfor the axle, and the form of this recess or depression is made to correspond to the shape of the bottom of the axle.
The hole for the king-bolt in the member 10", on its under side, is enlarged or formed with a conical recess 13, which receives the corresponding conically formed bearing on the end of the brace or bracket 14. A nut 12 is provided on the lower end of the king-bolt and rests against the under side of the brace when the parts are secured together. This brace 14 is curved and projects upwardly, and is made either single, as shown, and is secured either to the wheel 8 or a single reach when only one is used, or it is made With two arms at the top or Y-shaped when two reaches are used.
This device may be used in connection with supports 011 the axle for the fifth-wheel, known either as a full bottom or a quarter bottom. I have shown it with the latter.
The functions and advantages of the invention will be apparent. By the construction thus described I am enabled to produce a fifthwheel that has not only all the style and appearance of the old-fashioned clip king-bolt, but that is very much cheaper and far more durable.
Minor changes may be made in the details of construction Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any advantages of the in- Vention.
Having thus fully described the invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by' Letters Patent, is-
1. A clip king bolt attachment for fifth wheels, comprising a clip adapted to extend on one. side of the axle, an enlarged head adjacent to the opposite side of the axle with a hole for a king bolt, and with depending legs or rods, and the bottom yoke with holes or apertures for the legs of the clip, and nuts for securing the parts, substantially as described.
2. A clip king bolt attachment for fifth wheels, comprising a clip adapted to extend on one side of the axle, an enlarged head adjacent to the opposite side of the axle with a hole for a king bolt and with depending legs or bolts, and a bottom yoke with holes or apertures for the legs of the clip, and nuts for securing the parts, in combination with a king bolt secured to the head block plate, substan- I 'tially as described.
3. A clip king bolt attachment for fifth Wheels, comprising a clip adapted toextend on one side of the axle, an enlarged head adjacent to the opposite side of the axle with a hole for the king bolt and with depending legs or bolts, and a bottom yoke with holes or apertures for the legs or bolts and a recessed or depressed seat for the axle, and suitable nuts for securing the parts, in combination with a king bolt, substantially as described.
4. A clip king bolt attachment for fifth wheels, comprising a clip adapted to extend over one side of the axle, anenlarged head adjacent to the opposite side thereof with a hole for the king bolt and with depending legs or bolts, a bottom yoke with holes or apertures for the legs or bolts, and suitable nuts for se curing the parts, in combination with a lug carried by the head block plate, a king bolt depending from said lug, and a transverse bolt for securing the king bolt against rattling, substantially as described.
5. A clip king bolt attachment for fifth wheels, comprising a clip adapted to extend over one side of the axle, an enlarged head adjacent to the opposite side thereof, with a hole for the king bolt, and with depending legs or bolts, a bottom yoke with holes or apertures for the legs or bolts, suitable nuts for securing the parts, in combination with a king bolt, a brace with a conical projection fitting in a conical bearing formed in the bottom of the yoke and extending to and secured to the wheel or reach, substantially as described.
