IMPROVEMENT IN RUNNING-GEARS FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,252, dated September 22, 1874; application filed September 3, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN O. McCoLLEY, of Central College, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage- Goupling and King-Bolts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in brace king-bolts; and it consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts that will be more fully described hereafter.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
a represents the front axle, to which the lower part of the fifth-wheel is secured. rlhe upper part of this' fifth-wheel is secured rigidly to the under side of head-block, and is braced securely in position by means of the two braces c, which extend from the front edge ot' the wheel back through the spring to the rear edge. Heretofore it has been customary to pivot the lower part of the fifthwheel upon the king-bolt, which projects up through the axle and head-block, and have the wheel extend out as far behind as in front of the axle; but in this instance the pivot is formed by the screw-neck or projection 1 extending down from the under si le of the upper part of the wheel, and through which neck passes the brace-bolt d, which extends vertically downward from the beam e some distance in the rear of the axle. This brace is shaped as shown, having its front end rigidly fastened to the beam e of wood or iron that extends along under the body, while its rear end has a screw-thread formed upon it, and extends through a downwardlyprojecting ear, g, so that the angle or pitch of the vertical part can be adjusted at will. In the upper part of the fifth-wheel there is formed a box through which the brace-bolt passes, and upon the top of this part of the wheel around the bolt are placed a number of washers or packing, which arepheld down in position by the cappiece z', which ts the. bolt closely, and which' has an oblong opening through which the bolt passes to allow it to work sidewise with the swing of the bolt. Upon the under side of the upper part of the fifth-wheel is formed a screw-projection or neck, l, through which the bolt passes, and which passes down through the lower part of the wheel, and the two parts of the wheel are firmly bound together by means of the nut 2, which screws over the end of the projection. The upper part of this nut and the under side of the lower part of the f1ftl1wheel are recessed so as to receive a packing or washer of leather or rubber, to produce an easy pressure upon the two parts of the wheel. Pivoted to the top of the under half ofthe spring is a brace, 3, which projects backward toward the rear edge ofthe wheel, has a re-enforce, 4, formed upon its top, through which the bolt'd passes, and near its rear end receives the standard 5, which supports the rear end of the capplate t'.
By means of this brace-bolt I entirely dispense with the usual kin g-bolt, place the pivot of the iifth-wheel in the rear of the axle so that but a small part of the Wheel extends in front ofthe axle, greatly strengthen the front part of the vehicle, and entirely dispense with the rear bed-piece, reach, and stay-irons.
I am aware that a lifth-wheel' having its pivot placed in the rear of the axle is not new.
Having thus described my invention, I claiml. The brace-bolt d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the brace-bolt l and fifth-wheel, substantially as and for the purpose described.
