Be it known that 1, GEORGE E. HEATH, of Curtis, in the county of Frontier, State of Nebraska, have invented an Improved Corn- Planter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to cornplanters, and particularly to certain improvements upon my planter for which application for Letters Patent was made December 8, 1894, Serial No. 531,261.
The objects of the present invention are to provide a reel for placing the check-row wire and also to provide certain devices for dropping said wire whenever desired.
Another object is to provide an improved means for operating 4the dropper-plates of the seed-boxes, and a still further object is to provide a novel means of adjusting the height,
of the lister-plow.
With these objects in view my invention consists in the peculiar construction of the several parts and the novel combination or arrangement, all of which will be fully described hereinafteuand pointed outI in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this speciication, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of my planter. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view; Fig. 3, a detail view of the dropper-plate and actuating-arms; Figli, a detail view of same; and Figs. 5, 6, and 7 show details of construction.
In carrying out my invention I employ'a framework A, composed of the front and rear sections a and a', respectively, said rear part being mounted upon the axle C the same as in my prior device, and the seat and its frame, the means of connecting and adjusting the rear portion, the seed-boxes and lister-plows'are all substantially of the same construction as already shown and described in my prior application. 'f y A reel D is mounted upon the rear portion of the forward frame-section, said reel being intended to carry the check-row wire while placing the sanne in position for operation, and after said wire is properly placed is passed through the pulleys as heretofore and operates to drop the seed the same as usual. The reel is formed with a wheel D at one side ofthe same, and bearing upon the periphery of this wheel is a spring-pressed brake-shoe, which renders the revolution of the wheel steady and prevents the check-wire unreeling too rapidly. As before stated, the reel is only vused in placing the wire, said wire being attached or anchored at one side of the field and the machine ydriven vacross the field in vorder to accomplishv this operation, and inasmuch'as the wire passes beneath the machine during this ope'ration 'and through the operating-lever the machine will, of course, be planting during such operation. After the Wire has been placed and it isintended to operate the machine thereby said wire is passed through the pulley F, carried at the forward end of the tongue, vthe pulley G at the forward end of the frame, the pulleys H,mounted about midway of the forward section of frame, and the pulley I, arranged at the eXtreme rear end of the main frame. l
-The pulley F at the forward end of the tongue is suspended upon a spring-actuated bolt G', and connected with said bolt is a cord or chain G2, which connects with a lever K, mounted upon the side of the beams of the forward section of frame, so that-by drawing back the lever the spring-bolt will be drawn into its housing and the pulley F dropped.
The pulleys I-I H are mounted .upon the lower ends ot' right-angled rock-shafts L L, journaled upon the side beam of the forward section, their horizontal members being connected by means of a rod L', and a link or rod L2 serves to connect the said rod L with lever K, so that when said lever is drawnvback to release the pulley F the pulleys H H will be thrown around to a longitudinal position and thereby drop the wire.
As before stated, the seed-boxes of this device are substantially the same as those shown and described in my prior application; but the Y dropping-plates and means for operating the same are novel, said plate M having a series of teeth fm formed upon its outer edge, each tooth having a beveled edge m and an undercut edge m For operating said plates I employ a lever N, pivoted centrally upon thev forward section of `the frame and operated as usual, said lever having the operating-arms O pivotally connected therewith and having arrow-headed ends o for engagement with the teeth m of the dropper-plate, the said ends riding up the bevel m and dropping by gravity behind the undercut edge m2, thus avoiding the use of spiral springs for throwing the arms into engagement with the plate. For seeding I employ but one arm, while in drilling I employ two arms, operating the plate from opposite sides.
For the purpose of adj usting the listerplows I secure the beams P thereof to the cross-beam of frame by means of an adjustable staple P, and between the cross-beam of frame and beam of plow I interpose a wedge-shaped casting-piece R, slotted longitudinally to receive the staple P and its set-screw o, by means of which the casting can be adjusted in or out, and thus raise or lower the beam of the plow.
It will thus be seen that I have improved my previous construction by the addition of a reel, by dispensing with the spring-actuated arln for operating the dropper-plate, by providing an improved form of dropper-plate, and by providing improved means for guiding and releasing the check-wire, the operation of all said parts being apparent from the description and illustration thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a check row corn planter, the combination with a frame, of the guide pulleys F, G, and H, a spring bolt G, for supporting the pulley F, a rod G2 connected to said spring bolt, a lever K to which said rod is attached, the pitrnan L for turning the pulleys l-I, and the link L2, connecting said pitman with the lever K, substantially as shown and d escribed.
2. rlhe combination with a cross-beam of the frame, of the beam of a plow, the staple P', through which said plow beam passes, the slotted wedge shaped block R, interposed between the top ot' the plow beam and the bottom ot the cross beam, and means for securing said block, to the cross beam, substantially as shown and described.
