UNITED STATes PATENT rrrce OSKAR HRPFER, OF NUREMBERG, GERMANY.
SPECIFICATION forming par., of Letters Patent No. 544,533, dated August 13, 1895.l Application iiled May 18,1895. Serial No` 549,786. (No model.) Patented in Germany Api-il 5, 1894, No. 79,386.
To tZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OSKAR HRPFER, asubject of the German Emperor, residing at Nuremberg, in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Cases, (for which I have received Letters .Patent in Germany, dated April 5, 1894, No. 79,386,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object an improved extensible orpull-out pencil-case with a so-called English or ever-point guide device, and is designed to effect by the drawing out of a case a lengthening of the holder and simultaneously a protrusion of the lead out of the hollow point of the holder into a position ready for use. Means are also provided whereby the lead maybe screwed in or out by turning the pull-out case.
Thisimproved pencil-case having the action set forth is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section with the holder extended; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section when partly shut up; Fig. 3, an elevation, partly in section, of the pencilcase completely closed; and Fig. 4,'a transverse scction on the line my of Fig. 3.
The invention will now be described, reference being had to the drawings.
Inside the holder a so-called English or ever-point guide device is suitably secured. This latter consists of a tube b, fixed to the holder or outer case a and provided longitudinally with a straight guide-slot, the said tube b containing alead-tube c, which is adjustable longitudinally therein, the tube c having for this purpose at its rear end a projection d working in the said longitudinal slot and projecting through the slot, so as to engage in the thread e of an internal screw formed in a case e, which surrounds the tube Z). The case e is made revoluble on the tube b without longitudinal movement. By turning the case e the projection d, (which is guided in a straight 1ine,) together with the lead-tube c, is pushed forward or backward. In order to effect this movement of the lead by drawing out the pull-out case f, the threaded case e carries at its upper end a stud or pin g, which engages in a slot h, formed in the pull-out case f. This slot is of a spiral form in the forward part h of the case, but is straight in the rear part h2. itself is guided in a straight line and prevented from falling out by means of a projection f', which engages in a straight slot t, formed longitudinallyin a casing 7c, arranged in the holder. If the pencil-case thus formed, which in Fig. l is shown open ready for use, is required to be closed into its non-working condition, as shown in Fig. 3, the pull-out casefis pushed into the holder a.. By this movement, in consequence of the pin g engaging in the slot h at its spiral end, the threaded ease e of the English or ever-point guide device is first rotated, thereby causing the lead or pencil to be drawn inward. On the'pull-out case'f being pushed farther forward the pin g slides in the straight part h2 of the guide-slot and no movement of the lead takes place. On drawing out the case f the movement hereinbefore described is -repeated in vthe reverse direction-that is to say, only an extension o f the holderis first produced-and on the casef being farther drawn out the pencil or lead s is protruded into a position for use. In order to allow of the lead being moved in or out of the hollow point a independently of the pulling out'of the case f, so that the period of utility of the lead may be lengthened, the casing 7c, provided with the guide-slot t', may be made revoluble in the holder, so that the lead may be moved in or out by directly turning the case j", which will carry with it the pin g.
I declare that what I claim lis-.
l. Ina pencil case, the combinationfwith an ever point guide device, of a pull-out casel having a slot partly straight and partly spiral in which slot engages a stud or pin fixed to the revoluble case ofthe ever point device, whereby on the pull-out case being moved in or out, the pencil case is shortened or lengthened and on the movement being continued, the lead is drawn in or protruded from the hollow point substantially as set forth.
2. Apencil case comprising an ever point guide device having a stud or pin at the rear end of its operating case, a pull-out case having a slot partly straight and partly spiral, the said case being adapted to slide over the ever point device with its slot engaging The case f v ICO with the pin on its rear end, a casing surroundingthe ever point device and adapted to receive the pull-out case in its interior, the said casing having a longitudinal guide slot to receive a projection on the pull-out case in order to hold the latter against rotation relatively to the casing and to prevent it falling or being Withdrawn entirely out of the casing and a holderhavingahollow point, in combination, substantially as set forth.
3. Apencil case comprising an ever point guide device having a stud or pin at the rear end of its operating case, a pull-out case having a slot partly straight and partly spiral, the said case being adapted to slide over the ever point device with its slot engaging OSKAR IIARPFER. Vitnesses:
