To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES L. GANDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Auburn, in the county of Christian and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful WVire-Reel, of which the following is a specification.

This invention aims to facilitate the moving of wire such as is used in the construction of wire fences or for check-row planters from one place to another, and aims to enable the ready distribution of wire from the ball or spool, as it comes from the factory, when erecting and constructing fences.

The purpose of the invention is the provision of a reel which can be mounted upon the bed of a wagon and easily moved from one side to the other to adapt its position to the location and relative disposition of the wire to be reeled or the prescribed line of fencing for which it is desired to pay out the wire from the said reel.

For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, taken in connection with the following description.

Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the improved rcel, showing it mounted upon the bed of a wagon. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention, showing the position of the reel changed from that illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the detachable lever for checking the speed of the reel when paying out wire.

The numeral 1 represents a base or board of heavy planking which is designed to be attached to the bed 2 of any ordinary farmwagon in any desired manner, preferably by means of bolts 3, which pass through the said base 1 and engage at their lower ends with the bottom side of the wagon-bed. A base or board 4, similar in construction to the base 1, is provided and mounted upon the said base 1, being secured to the latter bya bolt 5, which passes through one end of the base-board 4 and through the. middle of the base-board 1. The standards 6 for supporting the reel 7 are mounted and attached to the top side of the board or base 4 and are formed, preferably, from flat bar iron, which is secured at its middle portion to the said base 4 and has its end portions 8 bent upwardly at about right angles to the base 4, the said ends 8 being given a quarter twist at their extremities to be attached to beams 9, which form supports for the reel 7. These beams 9 curve in opposite directions from a middle point on their inner faces to give clearance and prevent an extended surface for the ends of the reel to engage with. The reel 7 may be of any desired construction, and has its end portions centrally apertured to receive a rod 10, which is passed through the openings in the beams 9 and the openings in the ends of the reel 7, so as to support the latter when reeling or unreeling the wire.

The outer end portion of the rod 10 is bent to provide a crank 11, which is designed to be used when it is required to rotate the reel in a positive manner, so as to wind the wire thereon. A lever 12 is provided at one end with an eye 13 to be engaged with an extension 14 at one end of one of the beams 9, and

is adapted to engage with the rod 10 with such force as to retard the movement of the reel 7 when the wire is unwinding therefrom. It will be understood that in the application of this lever 12 the end opposite that in engagement with the extension 14 will be pressed upon, so as to cause the said lever to engage with the rod 10 with sufficient friction to attain the desired result.

The reel 7, it will be observed, is detachably connected with its supporting-standard 6, and when in proper place is mounted upon the rod 10, which is slipped through the registering openings provided in the beams 9 and the heads or ends of the said reel. 7

In proportioning the parts the base 1 will be of such relative length that its end portion will project a short distance beyond the sides of the wagon-bed, so as to receive a band or slide 15, by means of which the base 4 is held in proper position upon the base 1. When it is required to reverse the position'of the reel-that is, change it from one side to the other. of the wagon-bed-the band or slide 15, which normally encircles the

1 and 4, is moved so as to disengage it from one end portion of the base 1, after which the base 4 can be turned upon the bolt 5 as apivot and swung in a horizontal direction from one side to the other of the wagon-bed, the slide or band being brought into engagement with the opposite end of the base 1 and securing the reel in the required or newly-adjusted position. For reeling barb or other fence-wire or wire used for check-row planters the end of such wire is attached to the reel and the wagon moved along the line of the wire, which latter is wound upon the reel by operating the crank 11 in the usual manner. After one reel has been filled it is detached and another placed in position to continue the reeling or winding up of the said wire.

-It will be understood that each reel will have its own length of the wire and that there will be as many reels as may be required to wind up the wire required to be reeled.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a reel for winding or unwinding fence and other wire, the combination with a base board mounted upon a wagon bed, and having projecting end portions, and a similar base pivoted at one end to the fixed base, and adapted to swing horizontally from one side to the other of the wagon bed and provided with the reeling devices, of a band carried by, and movable with, the said pivoted base, and adapted to slide thereon to engage with either of the projecting ends of the fixed base and secure the reeling devices in either of their two operative positions, substantially as set forth.

2. The herein-specified device for winding or unwinding wire, comprising a relatively fixed and movable base, the latter being pivoted at one end and adapted to swing in a horizontal direction from one end to the other of the said fixed base, a slide, or band, mounted upon and movable with the pivoted base, and adapted to encircle the two bases and hold the movable base in the required position, standards attached to the said movable base, and comprising bars of iron which have their end' portions bent vertically and twisted, beams attached to the twisted extremities of the said bent ends of the bars, and having their inner faces oppositely inclined from a middle point, a reel, a rod detachably connecting the reel with the said beams, and provided at one end with an operating crank, and a lever having an eye at one end, by means of which it is detachably connected with a lateral extension of a standard and adapted to be brought in forcible contact with the said rod, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
