APPARATUS FOR GRINDING CARDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,441 dated August 13,1895.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOREN W. PENNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newton Upper Falls, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Grinding Cards, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in explaining its nature.
The invention relates to a grinding apparatus for grinding the flats of a revolving carding-engine, and in the drawings it is represented as applied to the grinding of the revolving flats. Broadly speaking, it comprises a cradle or support for the grinding-roll and upon which the grinding-roll is adjustablymounted, as hereinafter specified, and which cradle or support is itself carried by suitable stands or brackets which are so constructed as to permit the weight of the roll and cradle to bear upon the flat during the grinding of its wire-covered surface with any stress desired, the stress being that of the weight of the roll and the cradle, either in whole or in part, according to the inclination which the supports for the cradle may have or at which they may be set. The cradle carries adjusting devices whereby the roll is varied in its position both vertically and horizontally, the adjusting devices being in the nature of compound slides. Any suitable guides may be used for bringing and maintaining the roll in proper relation to the surface of the flats as they are being ground.
I will now describe the invention in connection with the accompanying drawings,-
wherein- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the apparatus attached to a carding engine. Fig. 2 is a View principally in elevation, a portion of the middle of the apparatus being removed in order that the ,ends may be brought together sufficiently to show the construction at each end. Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the parts to the left of the dotted line w x of Fig. 2 and in section upon the said line. Fig. 4 is a view in section upon the dotted line y y of Fig. 1.
A A are brackets attached one at each side of the frame of the carding-engine to project above it to any desired extent and at any desired angle. Each one is formed with a section or extension 0,, the upper surface a of which forms a partial rest or support for the cradle or housing of the grinding-roll, and the pressure of the grinding-roll upon the flat varies according as the inclination of this partial support varies, and also according as the weight of the roll and its cradle may vary, and by varying the angle of the upper surface a' by moving the brackets toward or from a perpendicular position the pressure of the grinding-roll upon the flat may be increased or diminished.
In Fig. 1 I have represented the brackets set at an inclination which I consider a desirable one for the efficient working of the device, but such angle, it will be understood, may be readily changed.
The cradle or housing B for the roll rests upon the surface a, and it may be said to consist of two principal partsnamely: a frame or casting b, which extends lengthwise the roll, and compound slides at each end of this frame, one of which slides upon the end in one direction and the other of which slides upon the-first-named slide in a direction at a right angle to that in which thefirst-named one slides upon the frame, the second slide having the bearing for the roll.
In the drawings, 0 represents the first of these slides, which is an angular piece or casting, one section 0 of which has a guide 0', which enters a guiding recess 0 in the end I) of the frame or casing 19, and the slide is adjusted up and down upon this end b by means of the adjusting-screw c carried by an ear 0 of the slide, which projects over the end b, and which screw bears upon said end, (see Fig. 3,) and the slide is locked in its adjusted position by means of the locking-screw 0 (see Figs. 1 and 4,) which passes through a slot c in the slide and screws into the end I), the screw having a washer or enlarged head which bears against the outer surface of the slide and serves to clamp it, when screwed down hard, firmly against the surface of the end I).
The second slide is lettered D, and it slides upon the arm (1 of the slide 0, and it is adjusted thereon by means of the adjustingscrew d, (see Figs. 1 and 4,) which extends through the ear (1 and screws into the threaded hole (1 at the outer end of the arm (I, and it is locked in any desired position by means of the locking-screw d, which extends through the slot d in the slide D and screws into the threaded hole at in the arm d. The slide D is connected with the arm d by a rib or extension to enter a guideway or in any other manner to prevent it from turning as it is being adjusted, and it has the bearing d preferably an open one, for the shaft 6 of the grinding-roll E, the shaft having a bushing e, which rests in the open bearing and which is prevented from turning by a lug 6 which enters a hole in the hearing. A stop a extends over the shaft or sleeve and serves to hold the roll in the hearing. The stop is represented as formed from a rod bent ataright angle, one end of which is threaded and screws into the slide D, the other end projecting over the hearing. The end plate or piece 11' carries the guide F, against the guidinging-surface of which the end of the flat is brought into contact and moved during the grinding operation. It will be understood that by means of the compound slides C D the grinding-roll may be adjusted in relation to the line of travel of the flat in any desired direction; it may be moved to or from such line or parallel with such line, or one end may be moved in either of these directions independently of the other, and that there is thus afforded a universal adjustment to the bearings of the roll, which permits it to be easily adjusted in place to the proper or best position for doing its work, and which also does away with the fitting formerly necessary in locating the grinding-roll.
By attaching the compound slides at each end together by means of the cross-support or connection 1), they are more rigidly, securely, and cheaply supported and the rollbearings better adjusted. In lieu of a castiron connection I) the connection between the end pieces I) maybe made by means of separate cross-rods. To prevent the cradle or support from being lifted from the brackets by the belt or in any other way, I have formed inthe ends of the cross-piece b a pin F, (see Figs. 1 and 4,) which enters the recess f on the inner side of the bracket through the openingf. The upper end f of this recess acts as a stop. The recess is of snfficient length to permit the adjustment of the crosssupport with the slide 0.
It will be understood that in the above description I have described, as a rule, only one side of the device; but the other side is like it in every respect.
The flats are caused to approach the guides F over the tables G, which beneath the guides are each provided with a cavity or depression g, whereby the flats while passing under the guides are thus no longer borne by the table G, but rest upon the supports H, thereby causing the weight of the grinding-roll and its housing to be carried or supported by the working surfaces h at each end of the flats While the grinding operation is taking place.
From what I have above stated it will be seen that the roll is adjustable vertically in relation to the guides F and horizontally and universally, it may be said, and this of course varies its relation to the flats as may be desired.
It will be seen that by turning the stops e the grinding-rollE is removable from its bearings. It will also be seen that the roll support or saddle and the roll are removable together from the brackets A, and after the roll has been once adjusted by the movement of its slides it is simply necessary to replace and remove the saddle and the roll as a whole when it is desired to grind the flats. It will also be seen that the adjusting-screws d and lockingscrews 0 d are so located as to be always easily reached or accessible when the saddle and roll are in operative position upon the brackets, so that the roll is easily adjusted in place.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In an apparatus for grinding flats, the combination of a vertically movable frame supporting the grinding roll, the vertically movable guides F carried by the frame, the table G cut away at g, the flats support H and the flats, as and for the purposes described.
2. In an apparatus for grinding flats, the combination with open brackets having inclined supporting surfaces, of acradle or support for the grinding roll resting upon said inclined surfaces and free to slide thereon, and a grinding roll mounted in said cradle, substantially as described.
3. In an apparatus for grinding cards, the combination with brackets having inclined supporting surfaces, of a cradle or support for the grinding roll mounted in said brackets and free to slide upon said inclined surfaces, a grinding roll adjustably mounted in said cradle, and means carried by said cradle for guiding the flats in their travel past the grinding roll, substantially as described.
4. In an apparatus for grinding flats, the combination with'open supporting brackets vertically adjustable relative to the main frame, a grinding roll mounted in said brackets and means for adjusting said grinding roll vertically with respect to said supporting brackets, substantially as described.
5. In an apparatus for grinding cards, the combination with supporting brackets vertically adjustable relative to the main frame, of a grinding roll mounted in said brackets and means for adjusting said roll laterally with respect to said supporting brackets, substantially as described.
6. In an apparatus for grinding cards, the combination with supporting brackets vertically adjustable relative to the main frame,
brackets, substantially as described.
7. In an apparatus for grinding the flats of carding engines, the combination with supporting brackets, of a grinding roll adapted to bear upon the flats during the grinding operation, compound slides mounted in said supporting brackets and forming a cradle for said roll, and means for adjusting said compound slides in said supporting brackets whereby the said grinding roll, mounted in said slides, may be adjusted relative to said flat guides and flats.
8. In an apparatus for grinding flats, the combination with the supporting brackets A, of the grinding roll cradle or support B detachably mounted in said brackets and the grinding roll E mounted in said cradle.
9. In anapparatus of the character specified, the-slides D having open bearings for the roll shaft e and its collars e and the stops e as and for the purposes described.
10. The combination of the end pieces Z) connected together by an intermediate connection b, the said end pieces also carrying the guides F and a compound slide consisting of the parts 0 D arranged upon each end of the end pieces, the slide 0 being adjusted directly thereon, and the slides D being adjust-' able upon arms of the slides O and the said slides D having bearin gs for the roll E, as and for the purposes described.
11. The combination of the cradle or support having the end pieces I), the slide 0 adjustable upon said end pieces by means of the adjusting screws 0 andlocked to said end pieces by the locking screws 0 which pass through slots therein, and the slidesD adjustable upon the slides O by the adjusting screws 01' and locked to said slides by the locking screws 61 which pass through slots therein, the said slides D having bearings for the roll E and the said adjusting and locking screws being in positions to be operated when the roll and'its support are in operative position upon the machine, as and for the purposes described.
12. In a flat grinding-machine, the combination with suitable supporting brackets, of a grinding-roll-cradle mounted in said brackets, and a grinding-roll carried by said cradle, said cradle and grinding-roll being adapted to be borne by or floated upon the flats during the grinding operation.
