HAME oR COLLAR FASTENER.

-SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,400, dated August 13, 1895.

Be it known that I, JOHN P. BAIRD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hame or Collar Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a'full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. My invention relates to hame and collar fasteners.

It has for its object to provide a fastener of this character which may be readily locked and unlocked, and which when locked will effectively hold the parts together, and which will be simple of construction, durable in use,"

and inexpensive of production. a

With these objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a bottom view of my improved fastener. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the same, showing the parts separated and in the act of being locked together. 'Fig. 3 is a similar View showing the parts in locked position.

Inthe drawings, 1 and 2 denote the shells of which the fastener is composed. The shell 2 is provided at its inner end with a tapering extension 3, having in its top wall an aperture 4 and in its bottom wall a slot 5. cured in this shell is a spring 6, which projects forward and is provided with a toe 7, which works through the slot 5.

The shelllis provided on its upper interior side, at the end thereof, with a lug 8, which o;is adapted to engage the' aperture 4 in the 11 denotes the shackles, one secured to each of the outer ends of the shells and which are adapted to be connected with the ends of the collar or hames to which the fastener is applied.- These shackles are preferably made adjustable by means of bolts 12, which pass through elongated openings-13 in the shackles, thereby enabling me to apply the fastener to horses of different sizes.

In operation, when it is desired to fasten the hames or collar around the animal the lug of the shell l is placed in the opening 4 of the shell 2, as shown in Fig. 2. Now, by moving the parts together the toe of the spring will spring past the end of the shell 2 and engage its opening, as shown in Fig. 3. The parts are unlocked by simply pressing the spring upward and swinging the shells outward.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation of the invention will be readily understood. The parts may be quickly connected and as quickly disconnected, and while fastened they form a strong lock and will effectively hold the hames or collar to whichever they are applied securely in position.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A hame or collar fastener, composed of two shells, one of. which is provided in its upper wall with an aperture and in its lower wall with a slot and with a tapering extension and a spring secured in said shell and provided with a toe which projects out through the slot therein; the-other shell being provided with a lug to engage the aperture of the first named in presence of two witnesses.
