MINING COAL-DRILL BIT FOR BORING IN COAL, 180C.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. BITTEN- BENDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plymouth, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mining Goal-Drill Bits for Boring in Coal or Rock; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to an improvement in coal-drills, the object being to provide a new and improved drill which is simple and durable in construction, effective in operation, and adapted to easily and conveniently out a large opening in the coal or other substance without requiring much power.
The invention therefore consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, substantially as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of my present improved coal-drill. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same on the line a: w of Fig. 1.
Like letters denote like parts in all the figures.
A denotes a portion of the auger part of my improved drill. Said auger A has its cuttingend B recessed, as shown, to provide the inner angular grooves or dovetail sides I) b, which receive the cutters.0 0, said cutters'being located, as shown, with one side of each against the inclined side walls of the grooves 19 b. These cutters may have any desired form and shape, but they are preferably triangular in cross-section, and their cutting-ends are suitably flared and sharpened. They are located in an inclined and divergent position, and the grooves b are correspondingly inclined, in order that the cutters may thus be inclined at an angle to the axial line of the auger, so that they will cut a larger opening than the central bit.
Between the two cutters O C and within the recessed end B is a wedge-shaped block D of a substantially triangular form, and having inclined sides d, which are in contact with the inclined sides of the cutters O. Thus it will be seen that the sides or edges (1 are doubly inclined, inasmuch as they are inclined to the axial line of the auger A, and are also inclined to fit the adjacent faces of the cutters O. This block D is provided with an anger point (1 or other similar central cutter of greater or less length, as may be desired, which projects in line with the axis of the auger, and forms the cutting-tip thereof. The auger point 01 is substantially a part of the auger A, although it will usually be of less diameter. The recessed end B and the construction of the cutters combined and ar ranged therein constitute, therefore, simply projecting cutting-points interposed betweenthe twists of the auger to increase the cutting capacity of the latter.
The block D is transversely perforated with a bolt-hole, coincident with which is a an opening in the auger end B, which opening is preferably square. A bolt E passes through the openings and has a head e located on the under side of part B, a square shoulder E that occupies the square opening in part B, and a nut F that is screwed down tightly upon the block D, so as to hold the latter firmly in position in the auger end B, as shown.
The cutters O are easily adjustable within their sockets, and can be made to project more or less therefrom, as may be desired, to increase or diminish their cutting-circle. The bolt can be loosened to permit the adjustment of the cutters to be made, and afterward tightened to secure them firmly in place.
