To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN H. SHULL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wellesley, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Housings for Sash- Pulleys, of which the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention has for its object to provide a housing thatis adapted to receive a pulley with any form of periphery and that may be inserted in the top of the frame after the latter is in place and having a seat vertically beneath the journal which rests squarely upon the top of the jamb, so that the entire load is borne by the j amb, and an inwardly-extending flanged arm which caps the opening in the frame and overlaps the lintel for attachment thereto, while the housing and pulley are both out of sight and the sash need not be plowed or cut away, as is necessary when the pulley is at the side.

The invention will be understood upon reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows the. pulley and housing in use; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the housing with a cord-pulley; Fig. 3, a plan of the housing; and Figs. 4 and 5, sectional views of the housing, the former showing the application thereto of'a band orribbon pulley and the latter a chain pulley.

1 represents the housing, which affords a support for the journal 2* of pulley 2 and at the same time covers the pulley, except on the lower outerquarter, and prevents the displacement of the sash-support which passes over it. This housing is formed with a load bearing seat 3 vertically beneath the journal 2, and a laterally-proj ecting flanged attaching arm or base 4, which'projects inward, caps the opening through which the housingisinserted, and affords means of attachment. To better confine the sash-support, the pulley-encircling portion of the housing is extended to the point 1. The base has a passage 5 to admit the sash-supporting cord, band, or chain 6 in a vertical line tangential to the inner side of the pulley, and a perforation 7 for an attaching-screw 8. The housing is formed in two shells 1 1, having registering notch and tooth 1 Fig. 3, which are riveted together by the journal 2, and preferably upon one of these shells is cast or otherwise formed integrally the base 4, while the other carries a portion 4 of the base 4 and has an overlapping lug 4 In putting the pulley in place the head or lintel of the frame is slotted at 9 sufficiently to admit the housing, after which the latter is inserted endwise and then turned up, so that the load-bearing seat 3 rests upon the top of the jamb or stile 10 of the windowframe and is prevented from outward displacement by the shoulder 3, while the inwardly-projecting base 4 is held up by the screw 8 and prevents inward displacement.

It will be observed that the relative positions of the axis 2 and the load-bearing seat 3 are such that .no downward force is exerted upon the screw 8, but rather an upward tendency is brought to bear at this point. The cord 6 or other sash-support passes vertically into the sash at 11, an auger-hole being all that need be made, and in this opening the cord is secured in any suitable manner.

The attaching-base 4 may be constructed either to lap on or be countersunk, so as to face with the lintel. My improved housing is constructed for insertion or removal after the frame is in place, and covers a sufficient portion of the pulley to prevent the cord from dismounting when the pulley is in use. The

division of the housing, as shown, admits of its being supplied with any size or design of pulley, either for rope, for chain, or for steel herein set forth.

2. In combination with the window frame, having the head-jamb slotted as shown to receive the pulley housing, the herein described housing in which the pulley is journaled, formed with a load-bearing seat 3 resting upon the top of the vertical stile of the window frame, in the slot and having the inwardly projecting lateral extension 4 lapping on or facing with the surface of the head-jamb and covering the slot, as explained.

In combination with a Window frame, the herein described housing 1 having a pulley journaled therein at 2, and formed with the load-bearing seat 3 at a point within the vertical line of the pulley journal, and the shoulder 3 for the reception of the upper end of the vertical jamb 10 of the window, and

provided with the laterally projecting base 4 I5 recessed at 5 for the passage of the sash cord 6, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

4. A housing for sash pulleys formed in two parts, each formed with a load-bearing seat 3 20 and one of which carries the lateral attaching base 4, said parts being secured together by the pulley-journal, as explained.
