ONWAY.
T EY WHEEL.
No. 544,157. Patented Aug. 6, 1895.
W itnesses:
- NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JESSE CONWAY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR OF FIVE-EIGHTHS TO JAMES F. MORRISON, OF SAME PLACE.
TROLLEY-WHEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,157, dated. August 6,- 1895. Application filed January i, 1895. Serial messa e. (No model.)
To allwhom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, JESSE CONWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltr more, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new-and useful Improvements in Trol- Icy-Wheels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in trolley-wheels designed for use on electric railways of the overhead system; and it has for its object the production of atrolley-wheel well adapted to keep in contact with the line- WII'Q- It is well known that in the operation of cars on the overhead electric system the trolley-wheel frequently leaves the line-wire, this being due in many instances to the swaying of the trolley-pole while the car is turning a corner or of a trolley-wheel coming into contact with the switches by reason of the upper portion of the wheel-flange striking the wire and causing the wheel to pass under the latter.
By my invention when the flange of the wheel strikes the wire the latter will, in the revolution of the wheel, be directed back to its proper position in the central groove.
The invention will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a front elevation of my improved trolley-wheel mounted in the usual manner. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of my improved wheel, taken on the line or so, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is also a vertical central section of the, wheel, taken at a right angle to the section shown in Fig. 2.
In the drawings, A represents a trolleywheel having a central groove a and two side flanges b, one on each side of said groove.
My invention consists in forming each flange b of the trolley-wheel with a spiral groovec on the inner side, beginning near the outer edge of the flange, as at 1, and terminating adjacent to the central groove, as at 2, all as clearly shown in the drawings.
It' will be observed that as the trolley-wheel travels in the direction indicated by the arrow, should either flange of the wheel come into contact with the Wire-say, for instance,
at or near the point 1-the latter will be caught in the groove 0, and by following it will be directed back into the central groove a.
B is the fork in which the trolley-wheel is revolubly mounted, and 0 represents a portion of the trolley-pole.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I A trolley-wheel having a central annular groove and two side flanges, each of said flanges, one on each side of the central groove, having on its inner side a continuous spiral groove, adapted to direct the line-wire from the flange to the central groove.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.-
JESSE CONIVAY.
