Description

(No Model.)
' H. G. STRALEY.
LAWN SPRINKLER.
No. 544,134.' Patented Aug. 6, 18-95.
" Jarizey UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY c. STRALEY, OF CLEVELAND, onto.
LAWN-SPRINKLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,134, dated August 6, 1895. Application filed August 29, 1894. Serial No. 521,655. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY O. STRALEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lawn-Sprinklers, of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in hose-sprinklers, and its objects are to provide a simple form of sprinkler which will discharge freely and sprinkle efficiently.
My invention consists in the curved discharge-nozzle, combined with a vertical bolt extending from its top, and a revolving spirally-curved spraying device placed thereon,-
as will be more fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of nozzle with a spiral spraying device. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, the spiral spraying device being removed. Fig. 3 is a detailed view of the spiral sprayer alone.
In the drawings, 1 is the nozzle, supported upon the arms 2 and 3 extending to the side and rear, the side arms 3 being turned forward at their extremities to prevent the nozzle from tipping forward. The nozzle is screw-threadedat the pipe-opening or waterinlet, and is tapered toward the upper end in a gradual curve of large diameter, so as to present a smooth surface, free from corners,
to the water as the course is changed from horizontal to vertical.
In casting the device a smooth core of metal can be employed and easily Withdrawn afterward.
At the upper extremity of the nozzle, at 4, is secured the bolt 5, which supports the spiral band 6, perforated at each extremity, at 7, to receive it.
Through perforations 8 in the upper extremity 4: of the nozzle project small streams of water against the spiral band and cause it to revolve at a high rate of speed, thus throwing the Water in a widely-radiating spray in all directions. This spiral band is cut from a plate of thin metal in the form shown, and afterward drawn out to complete the spiral.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a lawn sprinkler, the discharge nozzle provided with the openings through its end for separate jets of water, combined with the pivotal rod which projects above the end of the nozzle, and is provided with a stop at its upper end, and the spirally bent plate which extends around and revolves upon the rod, and is provided with a ring at each end through which the rod passes, and which rings hold the plate loosely in position, substantially as shown and described.
HENRY C. STRALEY.
