Description

H. ILL.
GASTER.
(No Model.)
Patented Aug. 6, 1895..

" ATT RNEY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY ILL, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
CASTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 544,101, dated August 6,1895.-
Applioation filed April 25, 1895. Serial No. 547,153. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, HENRY ILL,a citizen of I in gs, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in casters, and has for its object to provide a cheaply-constructed caster-frame, having a double bearing surface to prevent the breaking or the straining of the connecting top plate of the caster-frame, to which the post, which is arranged in the article of furniture and. in connection with which the caster is used, is secured.
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction of caster, and also in the minor arrangements and combinations of parts, to be hereinafter fully described and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
Theinvention is illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the caster comprising the novel features of my-invention, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is aperspective view of the ordinary form of caster-frame and its top plate, and Fig. 4. is a like view of a strengthening-plate to be used in connection therewith.
Similar letters'of referenceare employed in each of the above-described views to indicate corresponding parts. Q
In said drawings, a indicates the usual form of caster-frame, provided with the perforated top plate. a, having the downwardly-extending ears a which are perforated, as at a, to receive the pin 19 on which is arranged the usual form of roller or wheel I). To strengthen said top plate a and to prevent the breaking thereof, when the caster is used on heavy pieces of furniture, is the main object of my invention, and to successfully obtain this result I have arranged upon the upper surface of said plate a a separately-constructed strengthening-plate 0, having its free ends 0' 23d day of April, 189 5.
so, and its extreme free ends 0 and 0 turned beneath the under surface of said top plate a, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and then clamped fast in a press or by means of any other suitable tool. Said plate a is also provided with a perforation 0- which is directly over the central hole or opening a in the top plate a. of the caster-frame, and through which the end of the usual form of post d can be passed and riveted or otherwise secured on the under side of said top plate a, as will be seen from Fig. 2.
Thus it will be seen that by my arrangement of the strengthening-plate c on the top plate a, of the caster-frame I have devised a double bearing-surface for casters, which is of especial benefit in connection with cast-iron casterframes, which are subject to great strain in moving heavy furniture, and the danger of cracking the top plate of the caster-frame and also that of breaking the frame is successfully overcome.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a caster, comprising therein, a frame a. having a top-plate a, and the downwardly extending ears a and a separately constructed strengthening plate 0, having its free ends bent down at right angles, or approximately so, and turned beneath the under surface of said top-plate and between said arms, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a caster, comprising therein, a frame a having a top-plate ct, downwardly extending ears a? and a hole or opening a a separately constructed strengthening plate 0 having a perforation c and having its free ends bent down at right angles, or approximately so,
and turned beneath the under surface of said 5 top-plate, and a post in said perforations a vand 0 all arranged, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this HENRY ILL.
