HANDLE FOR EYEGLASSES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 543,803, dated July 30, 1895. Application filed October 17, 1894:. Serial F0. 526,183. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J EAN FEHL, manufacturer, residing at Hanau-on-the-Main, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Eyeglasses; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the invention,

reference being made to the accompanying drawings, which are to be taken as part of this specification and read therewith, and one which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention has for its object a novel form of lorgnettes, the glasses of which will rise when a simple pressure is exerted by the hand upon a special mechanism shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents the lorgnette closed. Fig. 2 shows the same in open position.

The lorgnette is composed of two levers A A, united by a pin a, and the frame B holding the glasses. The latter turns on a pivot b, projecting from the end of the lever A toward the lever A. A helical spring 0, placed in a suitable depression of the lever A, is

wound around the pivot 1), similar to the springs ordinarily employed in lorgnettes, said springs having the tendency to force the frame B constantly down and thus to turn it inward between the two levers A A Near the fulcrum-pivot b a stud d projects laterally from the frame B and extends into a slot e cut into the end of the second lever A, wherein it is guided when the levers A A are moved toward or from each other. This motion is obtained by giving a pressure on the handles of said levers. It will be easily understood from the drawings that by pressing the handles together the ends of the levers will move apart and the stud d in the slot e will receive a pressure, so as to swing the frame and glasses B outward into ahorizontal position, as shown in Fig. 2.

The device automatically closes as soon as its handles are released from pressure, owing to the action of the spring a, one end of which is coiled around and attached to the pivot b, the opposite end of the said spring being secured to the eyeglass-frame at a point preferably near the stud d.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a lorgnette the combination of a handle consisting of two levers hinged together about half way of their length, an eye-glass frame pivoted to the upper end of one of said levers, and a stud projecting laterally from said eye-glass frame, to engage with a slot in the upper end of the other lever, substantially as set forth.

2. In a lorgnette, the combination of an eyeone end of which is secured to said pivot, saidspring being adapted to normally depress the eye-glass frame, substantially as set forth.
