(No Model.)
' W. J. MEEKS.
Patented July 30, 1895.
WEED TURNER.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC WILLIAM J. MEEKS, or OXFORD, FLORIDA.
WEED-TURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 543,697, dated July 30, 1895.
Application fil February 16, 1894. Serial No. 500,376- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J MEnKs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oxford, in the county of Sumter and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WeedTurners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to plow attachments. The object is to produce a device in the nature of a weed-turner, of simple and inexpensive construction, and adapted to be adjustably secured upon a plow-beam, whereby the gatherer-arm thereof may be raised or lowered in a ready and convenient manner and sustained in proper position.
With these objects in view the invention consists, essentially, in a gatherer-arm vertically and horizontally adjustable upon a plow-beam and provided with a rearwardextending portion having a downward-curved extremity; furthermore, in a gatherer-arm secured vertically and horizontally adjustable and having an angular extremity designed to embrace two sides of a plow-beam; also a rearward-inclined portion provided with a downward-curved end; furthermore, in a gatherer-arm having an angular extremity designed to embrace two sides of a plow-beam and provided with a rearward-extending inclined portion having a downward-curved end, a supporting-arm lying substantially parallel and connected with the arm adjacent its curved end, and means for adj ustably clamping the arms upon opposite sides of a plowbeam; furthermore, in a gatherer-arm having an angular portion terminating in a threaded extremity and designed to embrace two sides of a plow-beam, the arm being also provided with a rearward-extending inclined portion having a downward-curved end, a supportingarm lying substantially parallel and connected with the gatherer-arm adjacent its curved end, the supporting-arm being slotted to receive the threaded extremities of the angular portion and an eyebolt encircling the gatherer-arm and engaging nuts by which the arms are adjustably retained upon opposite sides of the plow-beam, and, finally, details of construction.
The invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which'like letters indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of one embodiment of the invention applied, showing the gatherer-arm, the supporting-arm provided with an elongated opening through which the threaded ends of the gatherer-arm and an eyebo'lt encircling the gatherer-arm project, and the clamp-nuts by which the arms are adjustably held upon 'the beam. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views in elevation of the device, showing a portion of the plow-beam, the gatherer and supporting arms adjustably secured upon opposite sides thereof.
In the drawings, Arepresents the plow, and a the beam thereof, on which the weed-turner B is adjustably secured.
The device B comprisesa gatherer-arm b and a supporting-arm b The arm b is doubled upon itself at the upper end, forming an elongated opening I) through which the threaded extremity b of the gatherer-arm projects to receive a nut b which binds against a wear-plate b. The lower end of the arm I) is provided with a lower terminal eye or collar b which encircles the arm b at a point about centrally of its curved portion b which terminates in a vertically-curved down-shoot b. The upper portion b of the main arm is bent downward, as shown in Fig. 3, substantially at right angles to embrace two sides of the plow-beam and terminates in a threaded extremity.
0 represents an eyebolt encircling the arm b near its angular portion and arranged to extend beneath the plow-beam. Thisbolt is vertically adjustable upon the arm and projects through the opening of arm 19 where it is secured by a nut 0 upon its threaded extremity, a wear-plate 0 being interposed to afford a bearing-surface. The eyebolt C, abutting against the lower face of the beam, serves, when combined with the slotted portion of the arm b and the angular portion of the gatherer-arm, to completely surround the beam, thus forming a rectangular opening capable of being increased or decreased in a manner to be accurately and securely fitted to beams of varying cross-section.
Owing to the peculiar curvature of the gatherer-arm, it will be obvious that weeds, stubble, and the like will be effectually turned down and under the plow-point slightly in advance of the out, which results in many wellknown advantages.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A weed-turner, comprising a gathererarm, vertically and horizontally adjustable upon a plow beam and provided with a rearward extending portion having a downward curved extremity, as specified.
2. A weed-turner, comprising a gathererarm secured vertically and horizontally adjustable and provided with an angular extremity adapted to embrace two sides of a plow-beam, also with a rearward inclined portion having adownward curved end,as specified.
3. A weed-turner, comprising a gathererarm having an angular extremity adapted to embrace two sides of a plow beam and provided with arearward extending inclined portion having a downward curved end, a
ing substantially parallel and connected with a the gatherer-arm adjacentits curved end, the supporting arm being slotted to receive the threaded extremities of the angular portion 40 and of an eye bolt encircling the gathererarm and engaging nuts by which the arms are adjustably held upon a plow beam, as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 45 in presence of two witnesses.
