Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HICKSON AND LYMAN L. WILKINSON, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOSITIONS FOR DISINFECTING AND PRESERVIIIG.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 54,345, dated May 1, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN HIOKSON and LYMAN L. \VILKINSON, of the city of Auburn, in Cayuga county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Deodorizing and Disinfect-ing all Animal and Vegetable Sub-- character by means of a certain composition which we call Compound No. 1, to be hereinafter described.
The second composition we call Compound N0. 2, the object of which is, among other things, to arrest the decomposition of the human body after dissolution, and to preserve the same entirely free from all disagreeable odoror infectious exhalations or change of form and color without in any degree obstructing reanimation where animation is merely suspended; and in order that others skilled in the art may know how to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe the mode of compounding the same, and also the materials of which the same is made, and lastly the mode of applying or using the same for the purposes above described.
Compound N o. l is composed of the following articles in the proportions as follows: one bushel ground gypsum, one bushel ground charcoal, one-fourth bushel ground oak-bark, one gallon coal-tar, two pounds tobacco, and six pounds copperas. Mix the above well together.
As this compound is designed to be used for deodorizing privies, water-closets, drains, and foul places of this kind, it may be used in the crude or extract state by a simple external application, scattering with the hand when in a crudestate, or by sprinkling the liquid onto the places to be affected thereby.
We vary these proportions to suit the purpose to which the same is to be applied, increasing some of the ingredients and decreasing others, and making such modifications as will best subserve the purpose for which it is intended. I I
Compound No.2 is constituted of the following articles, in the proportions specified below one bushel ground gypsum, one bushel ground charcoal, six pounds ground copperas, four ounces ground tannin, two pounds tobacco, two ounces permanganate potassa, and four ounces gumeamphor.
We have made compounds No. l and No. 2 of such proportions of the several ingredients as we have assayed and deemed best; but, as we have said above, we frequently modify these proportions to suit particular adaptations of the compound to the work it has to do.
In applying this compound to the preserving of the deceased human body, weplace it on the bottom of the burial-case and underneath the lining of the sides. In extreme cases we make a quilted shirt and drawers stufied, with our compound inserted, to put onto the subject before placing the same in the burialcase.
Having above described the mode of making our deodorizing compound N o. 1 and No. 2, and shown how the same are to be used, what we claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
The compounds No.1 and No. 2, when made substantially as above set forth.
LYIVIAN L. WILKINSON. JOHN HICKSON.
