J. F. WITT.
DETAGHABLE UMBRELLA GOVER- No. 543,365. A Patented July 23, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATE T Enron.
JULIUS F. VVITT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DETACHABLE UMBRELLA-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 543,365, dated July 23, 1895.
Application filed January 25, 1895 Serial No. 536,168. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS F. WITT, of Chicago, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Umbrella-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of umbrellas wherein a detachable cover is employed, so that when the cover becomes worn a new one may be substituted without the aid of special appliances or the employment of a skilled workman.
My invention relates more particularly to the means for detachably connecting the margins of the cover to the bows or ribs; and it consists of a peculiar fastening hereinafter described, but more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows an umbrella with a detachable cover ap* plied thereto and open. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the outer end of one of the ribs, showing the cover in section and my improved fastening secured to the cover and engaged with and'embracing the rib. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the fastening detached. Fig. 4 shows the end of one of the ribs with the eye or loop thereof, and Fig. 5 is a plan View of the fastening.
In the drawings, A indicates the cover, which is of suitable material and apertured to pass over the tip ofthe stick B.
0 represents the ribs, which have suitable eyes 0 at their outer ends.
My fastening is made from a single piece of wire bent to provide the side members d e, the bow or loop f, the eyes 9 g, and the bent prolongation h. The members 01 e are separated sufficiently to adapt them to engage the body of the bow or rib C at a point near the eye 0, while the bow f of the fastening is curved or arched upwardly so as to pass over the top of Y the rib. The bent prolongation or extension 72. is adapted to enter through the eye 0 of the rib and its extremity is preferably arranged parallel to the side members e and in a plane parallel to and midway between said members. The straight portion of said extremity is adapted to enter the eye a from the side, and when entered therein the shoulder fat the junction of the straight portion h and the bent portion will engage the eye a of the rib, thus preventing its withdrawal. The pullof the fabric is therefore againstsaid shoulder, while the side members 6 d and the bow fembracing and fitting closely the umbrella-rib prevent the prolongation of the fastener from withdrawing from the eye of the rib.
The chief merit of the invention consists in the simple and inexpensive character of the device itself, while its construction is such that it may be readily attached to thecover by sewing through the loops 9 g, and as readily attached to the bow by simply passing the prolongation of the fastener through the eye of the rib.-
I claim- A fastener for detachable covers of umbrellas constructed integral from round wire bent to provide parallel side members joined by an arched bow and adapted to embrace the outerend of the rib of an umbrella, said side members being provided with loops or eyes for attaching the margin of the cover thereto and one of said members being provided with an offset extension adapted to provide a shoulder and its extremity being arranged parallel to the side members of the fastener and adapted to enter the loop or. eye of the umbrella rib and extend beneath the same, substantially as described.
