DANIEL J. HURLEY, OF NEIV HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE NE HAVEN CLOCK COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
METHOD OF FINISHING METALS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Eatent No. 543,303, dated July 23, 1895. Application filed December a, 1394. Serialllo. 531,235. (Nospecimens) I To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, DANIEL J. HURLEY, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Method of Finishing Metals; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same. My invention relates to an improved method of finishing metal surfaces in imitation of smoked pearl, and is particularly designed to be used in finishing cast-iron clock-cases, the object being to produce at a low cost a durable, eifective, and attractive finish having the effect of smoked pearl.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a method having certain steps, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim. 7 v
For convenience I will describe my method in connection with finishing a cast-iron clockcase, although I would have it understood that my finish may be applied to any metal surfaces, whether of sheet, wrought, or cast metal, and for whatever purpose.
In carrying out my method the clock-ease has one or more body coats of paint applied to it. The ,color of the paint will be dull white or pearl color or smoke color or some other light color which may be found to produce the most satisfactory results. The composition of the paint may also be varied as desired. Then, before the paint is quite dry it is smoked by bringing it in contact with a smoking flame, such as the light of a tallow candle. A- great variety of effects may be produced during the smoking process by smoking the paint heavily in some places and sparingly in others and shading it from light to dark and dark to light. The smoked surface is then varnished and baked, and, by preference, varnished and baked again, after which it is rubbed down and put in the oven to sweat. plied and baked on and the finish is done; but the steps following the smoking of the body coat of paint may be'varied as desired, it being necessary only that the smoked surface shall be protected by a coat of varnish, which may be made heavy or light and rubbed down or not, according to the character of the finish. I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact steps set forth, buthold myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A method of finishing metals in similitude of smoked pearl, consisting in first applying to the metal a body coating of paint, then in subjecting said body coating to the action of- Then a flowing coat of varnish is apa smoking flame before it is quite dry, and
