ROAD-ROLLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,949, dated July 16, 1895. Application filed May 21,1894. Serial No. 511,996. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. TOWNSEND, a resident of Wellington, in the county of L- rain and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Rollers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and to use the same.
My invention relates to an improvementin road-rollers,and more particularly to the connection of p the roller with the framework of the machine, the object of the invention '1 5 being to produce a connection between the roller and framework of the machine which shall be simple in construction, comprise a small number of parts, permit the roller to have a free swiveling and vibratory action,
and which shall be effectual in all respects in the performance of its functions.
With these objects in View the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View illustrating the application of my improvements. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional 0 View.
A represents a saddle adapted for the reception of a king-bolt andto be secured to the frame of the machine in any manner preferred, and B illustrates a yoke, the free ends 3 5 of which are adapted for the reception of the axle of the roller or rollers B. At a point centrally between the ends of the yoke B it is made with a practically V-shaped socket 0, having a curved bottom a, and in said curved 40 bottom of the socket a slightly-elongated perforation b is made.
Fitting loosely Within the socket O is my improved king-bolt D, which is made with an integral upwardly-projecting shank D, passing snugly through the saddle A and having a swiveling action therein, and said king-bolt is also made with a pin or projection D which extends through the perforation b, said pin or projection being adapted for the reception of a collar 0 and a pin 0', whereby to prevent upward displacement of said king-bolt. The portion 01 of the kingbolt which is within the socket O in the yoke Bis made V-shaped that is to say, it is made with diametrically opposite diagonal faces d, and at the lower ends 5 5 of said diagonal faces the body portion (1 of the king-bolt is made with a rounded hear ing e, adapted to bear and rock on the curved bottom of the socket O. The largest diameter of the body portion at of the king-bolt is less than the largest diameter of the socket 0, so that the yoke B maybe permitted to have a vibratory movement to permit the roller to readily pass over an uneven road or obstructions without injury to the mechanism connecting said roller with the machine, the inclined faces of the body portion d of the king-bolt during such vibration of the yoke lying parallel first withone inclined face of the socket O and then with the other, as will be readily understood.
By the construction and arrangement of parts above described an eifectual connection will be established between the roller and the framework, one which is very simple, comprising a small number of parts, one in which lost motion will be reduced to a minimum, and one which will permit the proper swiveling and vibratory action of the roller.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a road roller, the combination with a yoke having a socket'therein, two walls of which diverge, of a king bolt fitting two walls of this socket and capable of vibrating between the other two walls, and an integral bearing shank adapted to turn in the saddle of the roller, substantially as set forth.
2. In a road roller, the combination with a yoke having a socket formed therein, two Walls of which diverge, and said yoke having elongated slot extending from the bottom of the socket through the yoke, of a king bolt fitting two of the walls-of this socket and vibrating between the diverging walls, an integral upwardly projecting bearing shank adapted to he swiveled in the saddle of the specification in the pi'esenee of two subscribroller, a projection extending from the lower ing witnesses. end of the bolt through the elongated slot,
