SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,880, dated July 16, 1895.

To all whom it may concern,.-
Be itknown that I, JOHN WESLY FARIs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Round Rock, in the countylof Williamson and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harrows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in harrows; and its object is to provide a novel construction of the same, whereby the teeth bars or beams and teeth may be readily cleared of rubbish and other obstacles which tend to clog the teeth and interfere with the efcientworking of the harrow.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a harrow constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the teeth-frame. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of one of the teeth bars or beams.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates the axle, provided with wheels 2. 'Mounted upon the upper side of the axle is a rectangular frame, consisting of side beams (not shown) and front and end cross-beams 4. Also secured to said axle and end beams is a central beam 5, to which the tongue (not shown) is connected. Pivoted to the rear end of beam 5 is a short beam 6, the rear end of which is slotted, forming arms 7, in which is journaled a wheel 8. Secured to the axle near each end is an upright or standard 9, and to the beams 5 similar standards 10, to the upper ends of which are secured bars I2 and 13. Passing through the center of these bars is a vertically-movable rod 11, to which -the teeth-frame is connected, as hereinafter described. The upper end of this rod is connected with the front end of a lever 14, which is fulcrumedin a standard l5, secured to bar 13.
The numeral 15a designates the teeth-bars, consisting of horizontal strips of wood, metal, or other suitable material, provided on their under sides at proper distances apart with downwardly-extending teeth 16. There are eightteeth-bars shown inthe present instance, although more or less may be employed, if found desirable, which are connected together in fours by means'of cross-bars 17 at each end. The inner ends of these cross-bars are pivoted to each other,1hus forminga twopart or sectional frame. Each teeth-bar at its ends is provided with apertures through which pass verticallymovable pins 18, which project above and below said bars. The upper ends of these pins are secured to plates 19, and between these plates and the teeth-bars are interposed coiled springs 20, which encircle the pins. The lower ends of these pins are cut away or reduced, forming lugs 2l and shoulders 23, the lugs passing through apertures in bars or plates 24, located on the under side of the teeth-bars. Nuts 25 on the lugs 2l hold the plates in place. These plates are formed with'apertures coincidingvwith the rake-teeth, which pass loosely therethrough, so that said plates may be elevated or depressed by raising or lowering the pins. Each of the plates 19 of the sections comprising the teeth-frame are connected together by means of horizontal bars 26, which in turn are connected to each other by a cross-bar 27. Secured to the inner end of one of the front crossbars 17 is a lug 28, to which is pivoted the front end of a lever 29, with which the crossbar 27 is connected. The rear end of this lever is connected, by means of a rod 30, with the rear end ot' lever 14.
Each of the sections comprising the teethframe is connected at each end with the rod 11 by means of ropes or wire rods 3l, by which saidfraine is suspended The front ends of said sections are also provided with short bars 42, to which are secured the ends of a rope or wire 34, the center of which is adapted to engage with the upper end of an inclined pin 35, passing through a corresponding aperture in the beam 5. This rope or wire serves to drag the teeth-frame along with the machine as -it-passes over the ground. The numeral 36 designates aninclined bar secured to beams 5, the upper end of which is provided with a drivers seat 37.

usual, the teeth engaging with the furrows and breaking up and pulverizing the earth, as is well understood. When rubbish and other obstructions accumulate around the teeth and beneath the teeth-bars, they can readily be removed or disengaged and the teeth cleaned by depressing rod 30, which will elevate the front end of lever 14, which in turn will elevate rod 11 and the teeth-frame connected therewith. At the same time lever 29 will be depressed, which, through the medium of cross-bar 27, horizontal bar 2G, and plates 24, will depress the pins 18 and the plates located underneath the teeth-bars and connected with said pins, thereby clearing the teeth of the accumulated rubbish.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- In a harrow, the combination with the central beam, the axle supporting the same, the uprights secured to said beam, the connecting bar, the vertically movable rod passing therethrough, the lever to which said rod is pivotally secured, and the downwardly depending wires secured to the lower end ofl said rod, of the transverse bars to which said wires are secured, the teeth bars connected therewith, provided with teeth, the plates located underneath said bars and provided with apertures through which the teeth pass, the vertically movable pins passing through the teeth bars and secured to said plates, the coiled springs, the transverse bars to which the upper ends of said pins are secured, the horizontal bars secured thereto, the cross bar, the lever pivotally connected therewith, the bail secured to two of the teeth bars and pivotally connected with the front end ot' the lever and the rod connecting said lever with the upper lever, substantially as described.
