' A. ORANDADL.
. HOBBY HORSE. No. 542,871. Patented July 16, 1895.
'NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
JESSE A. ORANDALL, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, OF ONE-HALF TO SOHUYLER WALTER LESLIE, OF SAME PLACE, AND ROBERT HARDING, OF KINGS COUNTY,
NEvV YORK.
HOBBY-HORSE.
SEEGIFICATION forming part of Letters "Patent No. 542,871, dated. July .16, 1 895.
I Application filed January 21,1895. Serial No. 5 35| (N0 model-l To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ESSE A. CRANDALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hobby-Horses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is designed to produce a strong and simple arrangement of devices which will permit the child while astride the u bolts 1) and by the brackets c, the latter connecting the upper parts of the frames and being arranged one on each side of the center. A vertical post d is provided with trunnions e, which project therefrom in opposite directions and are journaled in bearings in the side frames midway between thetwo brackets c. The upper end of said post is also provided with oppositely-extending trunnions f, which are journaled in bearings secured to the under side of the horse. The lower end of the post 01 depends below the trunnion e and carries a weight g, which swings back and forth between the side frames in unison with the oscillations of the horse, and whose function is to quickly restore the horse to its normal position and the supportd to a vertical position. In front of the support 01 is arranged a vertical link h, whose upper end is pivoted to an ear on the under side of the horse and whose lower end is connected pivotally to the front brackets c, and in the rear of the post is a similar link pivotally con necting the rear bracket to the horse. By this arrangement it will be observed the child can impart to the horse a forward and backward movement by simply throwing his body forward and backward in the saddle with a somewhat jerky movement, the counterbalancing-weight serving to restore the horse after each movement to its normal position and give to it a momentum which will carry it over the center and thereby produce the initial impulse of the opposite movement. The vertical links h serve as supplemental supports only and keep the horse from tilting forward and backward during its swinging motion.
It will be observed that in order to prevent binding the upper pivotal centers of thelinks are in the same horizontal plane with the upper trunnions f, andthat the lower pivotal points of the links are in line with the center of the lower trunnions.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a hobby-horse, the combination of a base, a vertical swinging support pivoted on the base and'carrying at its lower end below its pivotal point a counter balancing weight, a horse pivotally supported centrally on said support, and means for maintaining its hori zontality duringits swinging movements, substantially as described.
In an oscillating hobby-horse, the combination of a base, a vertical support (1 provided with trunnions journaled in the base, said support extending below the trunnions and provided with a weight at its lower end, a horse pivotally supported on the upper end of said support, and a pair of upright links connecting the base to the under side of the horse, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JESSE A. CRANDALL. Witnesses:
