To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER TODD IR- WIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway- Track Lubricators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form av part of this specification.l

My invention relates to an improvedlubrieatin g device for street and other railway cars; and it consists in a means whereby `the rails making sharp curves may be lubricated to prevent wear of the iianges of the wheels, and also to preserve the rails and reduce the number of accidents caused from the cars leaving the track from excessive friction of the parts, together with the certain details of construction andlcombination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a street-railway car provided with my improved device in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the truck of the said car, showing the position of my improvement. Fig. 3 is an-enlarged sectional elevation of one of the lubricating-boxes, showing a means of bringing the Wheel conveying the oil in contact with the flange of the car-wheel.

To provide a street-railway car with my improvement, I attach to the cross-pieces 5 of the truck 4 four oil-boxes 6, each of which is formed in two sections attached at the rear by means of hinges 7 and at the front with spring-clips 8 to hold the two sections together. These boxes 6 are attached to the said cross-pieces 5` by means of integral flanges 18 and bolts and are coupled together in pairs by a shaft 12. Attached to this shaft 12 within each of the boxes 6 is au arm 11,

`tted with aloose wheel l0, adapted to be in a manner that will hold the lubricating Wheels or rollers 10 in contact with the flanges of the wheels 2,andkeep the same partly immersed in the lubricant contained in the receptacle 9 formed in the bottom of each of the boxes 6, one. roller being as shown at the right of Fig. 1 of the drawings. each of these shafts 12 is a semicircular grooved wheel 13, to each of which is connected a cord or chain 111 passed over suit able pulleys 15 and connected to a part 16, which may represent a lever 16, or to other means of operating the device, which in practice Would be arranged within reach of the trainman.

In operation the lubricating-rollers 10 when at rest are partly immersed in the oil in the bottom of the boxes 6, and when it is desired to lubricate the track when passing about sharp curves the shaft 16 is operated to bring the rollers 10 in contact with the flanges of the wheels 2, which will convey the fluid to Attached to.

the track 3, and when thepressure on the said shaft 16 is removed the rollers will be returned to their normal position free from the said flanges by the action of the spiral springs 17.

By means of this device the track may be lubricated while the car is in motion. Y
