STOPPING MECHANISM FOR PlLE-WIRE LOOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,806, dated July 16, 1895. Appfication filed July 27, 1894. Serial Nb. 518,691. (No model.)
To all whom, it may'conccrn:
Be it known that I, GEORGE POOLE, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stopping'Mechanism for Pile-Wire Looms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to pile-wire looms; and it has for its object the provision I!) of means whereby the loom may be automatically stopped in case a wire breaks in the operation of withdrawing the same or in case the hook or other. means fail to engage and withdraw a wire. 1
To these ends my invention consists in providing afeeler operated through the medium of devices connected with the lower or bottom shaft, so as that it may rest lightly against the wire when the latter is intact and while it is being withdrawn, and which'feeler may move when not brought to a stop against the wire so as to operate latching or tripping de- I vices connected with the shipper, and thus automatically knock off the loom.

The lower portion of the feeler-lever g extends downward andis curved inward, and its lower inner end is pivotally connected with one end of alongitudinally-movable rod h arranged in bearings formed in the bracket i. The inner end of the said rod is bent at r a right angle to the main or body portion, the angular part thereof extending back of a pendent lever j, provided toward its lower end with a notch or oifsetlc.
l is a lever pivotally'connected at its forward end to the lower end of a verticallymovable bar m, the upper end of which is adapted to act upon one arm of a detentor dog n on the shipping-rod 0, with which intermediate means are connected for the purpose of shipping the clutch-operating means (1 to automatically stop the machine.
The lever l is constructed and arranged to be engaged on its under side by a pin r, projecting from the side of a disk 5, and to be raised thereby and lowered by its own gravity once at each rotation of the bottom shaft b, to which the said disk is secured. 8
So long as the rear end of the lever Z is left free the said end will be raised and lowered by the action of the pin 4" thereon; but shouldpendent lever j be moved forward so as to cause the free end of the lever l to engage the go notch or offset 10 the said inner end of the said lever Z will beheld against rising and the forward end will be raised, raising the harm, and through it knocking off and stopping the loom.
t is a lever pivoted at its rear end to a stationary part of the loom and provided at a point intermediate of its ends with a bowl or roller to, which rests upon a disk Q) on the bottom shaft b. The lever t is curved upward at too its forward end and is adapted at this point, when raised, to act upon a pin to projecting laterally from the lower arm of the feeler g. The disk 1; is provided with a depression a: and a raised surface y, as shown. The disk 1;, with its depression a: and raised surface y, is in effect a cam.
The disks 3 and v, I may term for the sake of convenience a movable or rotary memher, since they are both mounted on the bottom shaft and turn together as one piece, having on one side a cam-surface and on the other side a pin.
The operation of the invention is as follows: At all times than just while the wire is being withdrawn the bowl or roller it will be on the raised portion y of the disk, which will have the effect of raising the free end of the lever i into contact with the pin to on the lower arm of the feeler-g, raising said lower arm and throwing the upper end or feeler properz' back and moving the rod 71 rearward, so as not to affect the normal position of the pendent lever j. \Vhile an intact wire is being withdrawn the bowl or roller u will run in the depressed part of the disk v; but the feeler 9 will still remain in positiou,as before, by reason of the fact that the upper end i will be held back by contact with the wire. Should, however, a wire fail to be withdrawn or should it break, the upper end i of the feeler 9 will move inward, the lower arm will gravitate outward or forward, drawingthe rod 71 and pendent lever 7' in the same direction and causing the inner end of the lever Z to engage the notch or offset in the said pendentlever, so that the forward end thereof and the bar m will be raised, with the effect of knocking off and stopping the loom, as before described. By this means a thoroughly efficient and certain device is provided for stopping the loom in the case of failure or breakage of a wire, and all of the mischief attendant upon such failure or breakage is avoided.
Having thus explained the nature of the invention and described a way of constructing and using the same, though without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made or all of the modes of its use, it is declared that what is claimed is- 1. In a pile-wire loom, in combination, a shaft (b) provided with a cam and a disk having a pin, a knock-oif mechanism, a feeler-1e ver adapted at one end to rest against the wire when the latter is intact and being with drawn, a pendent lever (j), arod (h) connecting the lever (j) with the other end of said feeler-lever, a movable bar (m) connected to said knock-off mechanism, a lever (Z) connected to said bar (m) at one end, a lever (t) pivoted at one end and provided with a roller to engage said earn, the free end of the lever (i) being arranged to engage said feeler-lever and the free end of the lever (1) being arranged to be engaged by the lever (j) substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a pile wire loom in combination, a cam carried by a disk '0, a feeler lever adapted at one end to bear against the wire, while the latter is intact and being withdrawn, and means actuated by said cam for operating said feeler lever to hold its above mentioned end out of the path of the said wire, while the latter is being inserted, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a pile-wire loom in combination, a pin carried by a disk 5, a feeler lever adapted at one end to bear against the wire, while the latter is intact and being withdrawn, a knock-off mechanism, a lever connected to said feeler lever, a lover I connected at one end to said knockoff mechanism, and adapted at its free end to be engaged and held by the lever it: when the latter is operated by the feeler lever on the failing of a wire, said pin being arranged to engage the lever Zbetween its ends, whereby upon the breaking or failing of a wire, the knock-off mechanism will be operated, and whereby at other times the movements of the lever I will not affect the knockoff mechanism, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a pile-wire loom in combination a feeler lever pivoted to a stationary support, and adapted at one end to bear against the Wire, while the latter is intact and being withdrawn, a knock-off mechanism, a rotary member carried by the bottom shaft, and interlocking connections between the feeler lever and said rotary member, and between said rotary memberand said knock-off mechanism,adapted to be operated by said feeler lever, whereby upon the failing of a wire, said knock-off mechanism will be operated to stop the loom through the medium of the rotary member,
substantially as and for the purpose set forth. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 2d day of July, A. D. 1894.
